Sporting KC vs. Inter Miami Match Postponed
Sporting Kansas City and Inter Miami will now play on Wednesday, February 19 following the postponement due to weather.
UPDATE: Concacaf have officially announced the match between Sporting Kansas City and Inter Miami FC will now take place on Wednesday, February 19 at 7 pm CST. Read the full announcement here.
Sporting Kansas City are set to start official competitions tomorrow, when they welcome Inter Miami to town for the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup matchup. To say it will be a warm welcome would be wrong on multiple levels. The weather forecast is calling for extremely cold temperatures and potential snowfall.
According to a report in the Miami Herald, the game could be postponed, not due to the cold but due to snow.
“According to two sources with knowledge of the game plan, both teams have been in contact with Concacaf officials and are monitoring the weather,” stated the Miami Herald. “If the conditions are unplayable, the game would likely be pushed back a day until Wednesday.”
As of this writing, Weather.com is projecting a 5-degree daytime high with a -2-degree nighttime low. The windchill will drag the temperature even further into the negative numbers. They have also issued a winter storm warning for heavy snowfall between five and seven inches. For a temperature comparison, the 2013 MLS Cup was 22-degrees.
One difference between that very cold game and Tuesday will be the state-of-the-art field heating system underneath the pitch. That will help the surface from being frozen, though will do nothing for temperatures above the field.
Peter Vermes told the gathered media on Monday they are prepared to play. Miami cancelled their in person press conference schedule for Monday and planned practice and instead moved their travel to Monday.
The KC Soccer Journal reached out to Sporting KC and confirmed as of this story going live, the game is going forward. If anything changes, it’ll be promptly communicated by CONCACAF and the teams.

I think it’s silly that all of these tournaments exist but now that tickets are $20, I may try and go
I actually like this tournament. This issue is, SKC don’t deserve to be in it. Qualifying by losing the Open Cup final after beating a single MLS team on the way to that final is dicey.
Fully agree. They shouldn’t have been in. I would have rather them be in the Open Cup again. But it is what it is. I think all the cup tournaments this year are a mess. Some teams get to be in a couple, others dont and they dont really get an option on what to be a part of.
Oh well. I am looking forward to this season. I think it will be a rough start but hopefully start to smooth out a bit before the “10 games” that PV talks about. 10 Games to access the team and where they are. That has killed us the last few season. I would rather it be a “5 game” type thing.
“10 games” sounds like words from a coach that is trying to manage expectations so the fans don’t start screaming for his head right away. 🙂
Honestly, I’m giving PV some renewed credit. I’m willing to concede that his job was pretty tough over the past 4 years with the ownership and dual roles. I hope he can make this group of players into a good team that is tough to play against.
In Vermes’ defense, even when his teams have been very good, he tells us that line about needing 10 games to know who they really are. When Harold Kuntz asked about it at the presser, the audience laughed because it’s such a common trope from him.
