Rumor: Sporting KC Closing in on Brazilian Defender Diego Borges?
Reinforcements incoming? Sporting KC reportedly beats out European competition to land 6’4″ Brazilian defender Diego Borges.
Sporting Kansas City appears set to sign reinforcement for their defensive line. According to rumors emerging from Hungary, the club has reached an agreement with Zalaegerszegi TE (ZTE) for 21-year-old Brazilian center-back Diego Borges.
While the club has not officially announced anything, reporting from the Hungarian newspaper Nemzeti Sport suggests that a deal may have been struck.
The Reported Deal
Negotiations between the clubs reportedly reached a breakthrough in early February. While ZTE is said to have initially rejected Sporting Kansas City’s opening bid, the Hungarian side is rumored to have accepted an offer in the region of $1 million. Sources suggest that while the agreement is in place, the official announcement is pending the completion of administrative paperwork, likely involving the player’s P-1 Visa and International Transfer Certificate, as he continues to train in Hungary.
If completed, Borges is expected to occupy a U22 Initiative roster slot. This mechanism allows Sporting KC to add the young defender with a reduced budget charge of just $200,000, regardless of the transfer fee paid.
Who is Diego Borges?
Diego Henrique Borges da Silva fits a profile that new head coach Raphael Wicky has been looking for: a tall, left-footed, ball-playing defender.
Borges developed within the famed academy of Santos FC in Brazil, a system known for producing elite talent. He moved to Europe in September 2025, signing with ZTE. Standing at 6-foot-4, Borges brings aerial dominance to a backline that has struggled with set-piece defending. As a left-footed center-back, he offers a tactical advantage in the attack, allowing for more natural passing angles to the left flank.
Although he made just six appearances in the Hungarian league during his time in Europe, his physical traits and pedigree were enough to generate interest from other suitors, reportedly including the Colorado Rapids and Belgian side KAA Gent.
The pursuit of Borges comes at a critical time for Sporting Kansas City. The roster entering the 2026 preseason is dangerously thin. With what remains of the incumbent starters facing little competition, the addition of a young, physical defender addresses one of the team’s many needs.
If the reports hold true, Sporting KC has managed to beat out European competition to land a high-ceiling prospect who could anchor the defense for years to come.
The hits keep coming!
Good God, please! I was happy to see any type of rumor at this point, but a CB? That’s too good to be true.
