Cooper, Hutton Called Up to US Futures Camp

Yesterday, US Soccer announced their roster for the US Futures Camp taking place January 14th through the 21st at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. The camp will run concurrently with the US Women’s National Team camp. The Kansas City Current will have two representatives at the Futures Camp, forward Michelle Cooper and midfielder, Claire Hutton.

It’ll be the closest both KC players have been to the full national team so far in their career. Cooper had captained the US U20 team at the 2022 World Cup in Costa Rica. Hutton spent time this summer with the U20 team at the 2024 version of the tournament in Colombia where the US women took third place.

Cooper had a solid second season in the NWSL, scoring three league goals and adding two assists in twenty-one appearances. She added another goal and two assists in the playoffs and Summer Cup as she played in twenty-eight of KC’s thirty-three games in all competitions.

Hutton had a break out season in her first as a professional soccer player. The midfielder played well beyond her years and immediately won a starting job in KC’s midfield. Her performance helped her to be named a finalist for US Soccer’s Young Women’s Player of the Year Award. Hutton played in twenty-nine games across all competitions for KC scoring her first professional goal in KC’s 4-1 win over Tigres in the Summer Cup.

The twenty-four players will be coached during the camp in tandem between US Women’s coach, Emma Hayes and the USA’s Youth National Team Coaches.

With the 3 collegiate signings, it looks like their roster is at 24. What’s the limit? I wonder when the last time was that an athlete played professionally for their parents team?

Roster limit is 26, so we technically have 2 more spots.

I’m so glad that Hutton and Cooper are getting this opportunity. Coop might have a tough road but she was really hitting her groove towards the end of the season with goal-scoring and assists to go along with her amazing work-rate. I know i’m partial but I would choose Hutton over Coffey and Albert who already are mainstays not to mention Moultrie in the US midfield pool.

I don’t know if Hutton is already over Coffey, but she seems on an arc to be sooner rather than later. Moultrie is more of an attacker, but I’ve not the hype for her. I will admit I haven’t seen many Thorns games other than when playing the Current.
