After a road game in New Jersey against Gotham FC where the Current earned a point, remaining unbeaten and at the top of the table, Kansas City returned to CPKC Stadium to host Bay FC. The streak would be extended to five with the Current remaining unbeaten after a 5-2 win.

Starting XI

Hailie Mace returned to the starting lineup, and Bayley Feist earned her second start, filling in for Lo LaBonta, who missed another game with injury. The rest of the lineup remained pretty much the same with usual cast.

KC doing KC things

KC started the attack early, and super early, as in two goals by the seventh minute, taking a 2-0 lead.

  • Goal number 1: Bia Zaneratto with her third goal of the season.
  • Goal number 2: Bayley Feist with her first goal of the season, off a corner kick with a header. Assisted by Alexa Spaanstra.

According to OptaJack, Feist became the 10th different goalscorer for Kansas City this season. It is the most in NWSL history for a team in the first five games.

Bay FC was able to get on the board in the 17th minute, though. Kansas City once again conceded a goal off a set piece, a corner kick as Kayla Sharples connected with a header. It would be the only goal given up by Kansas City in the first half, keeping their 2-1 lead heading into halftime.

It’s the Chawinga & Bia Show!

We are just living in it. Really. If there were any worries with a 2-1 lead coming into the second half, Chawinga and Bia showed why there shouldn’t be as both helped extend the lead. Chawing with 2 goals, and Bia with another this game.

  • Goal number 3: Chawinga settled the ball so easily after receiving a pass and took into the box for a shot to the bottom right corner. Easy peasy. Goal.
  • Goal number 4: With a long ball from Vanessa DiBenardo to Chawinga, and goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx nearly basically out of the box, Chawinga lobs it in for her second goal of the game.
  • Goal number 5: Bia receives a pass from Chawinga. Briefly loses the ball, but recovers and puts it in for another goal.

Bay FC briefly spoiled the fun, adding a second goal, but it wouldn’t be enough or close enough to impact Kansas City’s lead, and the Current closed out the game with another win at home.

I really hate the NWSL’s broadcast fragmentation. Would’ve been fun to watch this one but I don’t have access to Ion.

To add to this, NWSL is really dropping the ball on highlight accessibility. No highlights or video recaps available on the league site. Click on the match and see a prominent “Watch the replay on Ion” box. OK, click on that, and get sent to a generic page advertising Ion’s NWSL coverage but with no scores or highlights, just listings for next week’s games already. So I ended up searching it on YouTube and finding a poor-quality highlight reel from a third-party channel.

skcfanipromise

neither do i, but i was able to watch it… maybe i clicked a lucky link or there is some regional locking?

next game, see if it works: https://tubitv.com/live/682634/ion

(but it should be MUCH easier; for a league wanting to grow, make watching games and replays, etc, as accessible as possible)

my daughter and I were able to a access Ion live during the game on our phones by going to the plutoTV website, and clicking one ion. we had to enter our zip code and it game us access to the game.https://pluto.tv/en/live-tv/65453f30085df200085883d8
I know this is a learning process, and i assume different things will work/not work for different people. On our smart tv, it is available using the roku channel if you have access to that

Yeah, I was frantically searching and then complaining about Ion. Then I realized Roku has it on their Live TV lineup. Also, YouTubeTV didn’t have it live, but put up the replay pretty quickly after it was over. Don’t know if that helps.

Would really love to see a replay of the Bia shot from distance that the Bay keeper barely touch over the bar. That was almost amazing.

Anyone hear what Loera’s status is. Loved that we stomped her new team, would be sad if she was out long term.

ar_jhawk

I’ll answer my own question. Saw somewhere Loera confirmed it was her ACL.

Here in the metro I was psyched to have this one on 38. Excuse me, 38 The Spot. Just like the old days, bring soccer back to UHF.
