Across State Lines: Offseason Movement Kicks Off

The MLS season came to a close this past week with the Columbus Crew defeating Los Angeles FC 2-1 in MLS Cup. With the league season now over the offseason has kicked into full gear with the roster freeze coming to an end, trade windows opening and players able to sign for new teams. Multiple players with ties to KC have already made moves around different US leagues from MLS, to the USL Championship, to the NWSL.

In terms of MLS moves, two former Sporting KC academy players have joined new clubs. Lucas Bartlett was part of a trade that sent him from St. Louis City SC to DC United along with Jared Stroud and allocation money for Chris Durkin. Another former academy player joined his first MLS roster as the Philadelphia Union this week announced that former academy player, Isaiah LeFlore has signed a contract with the club. LeFlore has spent the last couple seasons with the Houston Dynamo’s MLS Next Pro team, Dynamo II.

In the USL Championship, teams are signing players ahead of the 2024 season, including former Sporting KC player, Graham Smith. This past week Smith moved from Memphis 901 FC, where he’d played the last two years to the Charleston Battery. Meanwhile in the NWSL as teams prepare for the expansion draft, former KC Current goalkeeper, Carly Nelson is on the move, being traded to the Utah Royals in a trade to get the Orlando Pride expansion draft protection. In another trade for expansion draft protection, the Washington Spirit sent KC native Dorian Bailey to Bay FC.

Finally, a congrats to Jimmy Medranda, who was an unused sub for the Crew in their MLS Cup victory over LAFC.
