Across State Lines: NWSL Offseason Kicks Into High Gear

The NWSL season has kicked into high gear this past week with the league’s expansion draft taking place for their new teams, Bay FC and Utah Royals. While the KC Current made trades with both teams so that they didn’t have a player selected in the draft, a couple former Kansas City players were on the move in the draft. First former KC player selected was Elyse Bennett by Utah. Bennett’s time with Utah didn’t last long though because days later she was traded from the Royals to San Diego Wave FC for allocation money. The other former KC player selected was Katelyn Rowland, who played with both KC NWSL teams at one point, as she started her career with FC Kansas City and was acquired by the Current in their first year in the league. Rowland was selected by Bay FC with their fourth pick of the expansion draft.

Those two weren’t the only two former KC players players on the move as former goalkeeper, Carly Nelson was traded to the Royals for allocation money from the Orlando Pride. Also on the move this past week was KC native, Dorian Bailey, who was traded to Bay FC as part of the Washington Spirit’s trades to get themselves exempt from having players taken in the expansion draft.
