Erik Bergrud from the Kansas City Comets broadcast team and Thad Bell from the Kansas City Soccer Journal recorded the latest episode of The Blue Turf for the 2023-24 season and we are again NOT at the now “World Famous” Kansas City Soccer Dome. There is a special guest in a second segment this week.

After starting the season so strong, the Comets hit a winless skid since their last home game. A loss at 7-5 loss in Utica and an overtime loss at the Ambush (after leading 4-1 at halftime) have continued the struggles for Kansas City last weekend. Erik and Thad discuss what went wrong so far in the season.

Another topic is Leo Gibson becoming the new goal-scoring king in all competitions as he passed Kevin Koetters. It’s a huge achievement for Gibson and cements his legendary status.

Stay tuned after the normal Blue Turf pod with Erik. A little after the half-hour mark, Thad is joined by Kansas City Managing Partner and General Manager Brian Budzinski. He is generous with his time and Budzinski is asked a number of questions about the state of the Comets. Some of the discussion is about what has gone wrong for the Comets in the 2023-24 season, the historic nature of the winless streak, veterans needing to help Coach Stokik get the team get back on track, and whether anyone is on the hot seat.

For a little lighter fare, we also spend some time talking about the 2026 World Cup in Kansas City and what it means to be hosting six games here in Kansas City.
