It was one way traffic in one of the more dominant 1-0 wins you will ever see when Colombia defeated Ghana.

For the fifth time in the history of the world, Kansas City hosted a FIFA World Cup game at Arrowhead Kansas City Stadium. This time, it was the first official elimination game, though Algeria versus Austria had high stakes as well over the weekend. The round of 32 game feature Colombia versus Ghana. Colombia rolled out a star-studded lineup featuring Luis Diaz and James Rodriguez leading the attack.

The Ghanaians were led by captain Jordan Ayew.

Ghana gave an early scare with the game’s first true opportunity off a Colombia turnover. Villareal man, Thomas Partey had it fall to him, but the ball was struck just wide of the net.

Colombia would suffer an early blow as star striker Jhon Cordoba had to come off for a very early injury and was replaced by Luis Suarez. Only a few minutes later, the Colombian fans wanted a penalty (though there was nothing in it), Marvin Senaya appeared to injure his hamstring and was replaced by Alidu Seidu. Two early subs, one for each side.

After the sub, Colombia would strike immediately in the area vacated by the injured Senaya. A well struck cross from the endline by Diaz found a wide open Jhon Arias to put Colombia up 1-0 in the 14th minute.

After the goal, the game moved in waves. Colombia was dominant in possession for the next 15ish minutes. At times stringing together dozens and dozens of passes without Ghana getting a touch. Around the 30th minute, Ghana started to gain some control and found themselves with the ball in Colombia’s half. Neither team was able to create a high-quality chance in that stretch though.

The next 10 minutes were a bit of back and forth before Lawrence Ati-Zigi was called into action. Colombia had a nice build up and played a ball wide to Daniel Munoz who drove a cross through the box and found the head of left back Johan Mojica who forced a diving save! It was nearly 2-0 Colombia heading into the half. The rare fullback to fullback cross nearly paid off.

Just before the half it started to get very chippy. A Ghana substitute pushed a Colombian player after they committed a foul, appearing to partially enter the field of play. Then Colombia responded shortly after with Suarez absolutely leveling Kwasi Sibo. But the cards stayed in the ref’s pocket, ensuring the chippiness would continue.

Colombia went into halftime up 1-0.

Colombia made one change to start the second half, replacing James Rodriguez with Richard Rios. James had a game to forget. The second half continued where the first half ended with Colombia maintaining control. In the 56th minute it looked like they doubled their lead and the crowd went absolutely wild. Arias had tried to return the favor to Diaz with the cross, but the Bayern Munich man was rightfully called offside, and Ghana remained only a single goal behind.

Colombia stayed on the front foot and Luis Diaz looked certain to put one in the net, but he blasted the shot straight at the keeper. In the 62nd minute Ghana went to their bench to inject some life. Elisha Owusu and Abdul Fatawu replaced Inaki Williams and Sibo.

The game stumbled into the second half hydration break. Out of the break Arias was replaced by midfielder Juan Quintero. Ghana would get some movement forward but then they couldn’t create anything, so in the 79th minute they were back to the bench making more moves. Ayew and Caleb Yirenkyi came off for Ernest Nuamah and Prince Adu.

Despite all the changes, Ghana refused to push numbers into the attack with their entire backline and two-thirds of their midfield rarely moving forward. Colombia had the better of the chances, including a curling shot that went just wide of the post. When Ghana looked like they were going to create a chance, an off-ball foul negated a shot that zipped just over the top left corner.

It really felt like Colombia thought they needed a goal as they were the only team pushing forward and taking shots. In the end, Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup run petered out and Colombia moved on to the round of 16. With another win, they’ll be back at Arrowhead potentially playing against Argentina in the quarterfinals.
