Still no new official signings, but here is another rumor for Sporting Kansas City. Cesar Inga out of Peru.

Although radio silence remains out of Sporting Kansas City headquarters, the second rumor in as many days came trickling out about a potential target. Gabriel Pacheco of A Presion Radio is reporting the MLS side has shown interest in Peruvian fullback Cesar Inga.

That news comes on the heels of the Juljan Shehu rumor the KC Soccer Journal covered on Sunday. Footboom1.com is also giving additional insight on the rumor, but it’s unclear if it’s an independent source or if Footboom or Pacheco are sourcing from one another.

Footboom has New York City FC also in the race to sign Inga, along with a potential move to Argentina. They do stress SKC have not made an official offer yet, “but don’t be surprised if the situation escalates in the coming days.”

As with the Shehu rumor, the Inga rumor could be nothing. But let’s learn about Cesar just in case.

Who is Cesar Inga?

Inga is a 23-year-old defender out of Peru that primarily plays left back. At times, he has played center back and wide left midfielder as well, according to Transfermarkt. He plays for Peru top flight club, Universitario de Deportes and joined them in early 2025. Before that he was with AD Tarma and moved over to Universitario for a very small transfer fee.

He has played extensively this season with over 2,500 minutes in all competitions across the Apertura and Clausura seasons, as well as in the Copa Libertadores (Peru Cup). He’s scored one goal in that time and made four appearances for the full Puru National team this season, adding an additional goal.

Despite primarily playing as a left back this season, the 5’10” defender is right footed. For his national team, he has played on the right side as well.

Inga is under contract through the end of 2027, so likely a transfer fee of some sort may be needed to acquire him. And as a Peruvian, he would seem to need an international roster spot.

Sporting KC Fit & Highlights

Sporting Kansas City only have two defenders listed on their official roster, so they need help everywhere. Zorhan Bassong can and has played left back for the team, but the only other defenders the team has are center backs right now. Sporting KC drafted left back Nikos Clarke-Tosczak in the SuperDraft a couple weeks ago. The team traded up to pick him, but he hasn’t been signed yet.

On the right side of the defense, the team has no official right backs, but Jake Davis has played there at times.

His highlights are a mix of left back and right back. He’s clearly confident on the attack and in taking on players one v one. Inga is comfortable with the ball at his feet. Cesar’s finishing isn’t top notch, but he’s also a defender so that’s to be expected. His lone goal is a shross, so it’s not clear he was trying to score.

If and when Sporting KC start making official moves, the KC Soccer Journal will be here to cover it. Let us know what you think of Inga in the comments below.

Since 2014, Chad Smith has been deeply involved in covering Kansas City soccer. He's written about Sporting KC, the KC Current and SKC II for numerous platforms, including The Blue Testament, which was the precursor to the KC Soccer Journal. While his initial connection to Sporting KC was established in Phoenix covering preseason, he now resides in the Kansas City area, offering thorough analysis and a strong commitment to local soccer.

It is a rumor about a missing piece, so thats something positive. I just wish there was more than drawing attention.

I know the MLS is odd but we are 2ish weeks from training camp and missing half the team. Do they really expect a team to mesh together in a month and win when they’ve just met, just moved to a new country and are trying to build a whole new culture?

Bleacher Creature

That is a big expectation for any club. I don’t see how that happens given the time constraint. I share your concern.
As a fan I’d love to see more reassurance from the front office. Radio silence isn’t much to hold onto.

Stu

My hope is that they somehow get players who are above MLS caliber players, if not then it’s going to be extremely hard for them to win on day 1 and we will once again be told oh just wait until the summer!

Bleacher Creature

As much as it would be tough for me to hear, I could actually accept the “wait until summer” point IF the club was a bit more communicative up to this point. I don’t need to know club secrets, but just keep us posted that the process is in motion. I wouldn’t like it, but I could accept it.

At this point, I have to expect that they have a coach and multiple targets and are just waiting to announce until after the new year for some “new year new team” marketing BS. But being two weeks away from preseason and hardly any rumors doesn’t feel encouraging.

David Lee mentioned on January 8th that earlier this week, he was informed by a South American club that they were no longer willing to sell their player due to their newly appointed manager’s interest in the player. I would guess that the player in question was Inga, as Universitario de Deportes recently hired a new manager at the end of December.

Lee went on to say that he aims to sign 10 more players to fill the squad out. Obviously, his goal is to sign them now, but he stated he preferred to make good decisions or no decision over bad decisions, and that his team was nearing the point of making some surface-level okay decisions in an effort to fill roster spots.

Lee also said there was a player that he wanted to sign who was still under contract for another six months. He elaborated that he was weighing whether to pay the other club the $1mil now or wait a few months and get the player on a free transfer in the Summer. Likely, depends on how many other players Sporting can sign and bring in during preseason, which starts on Sunday.

There was an event at the training facility branded as a “Conversation with David Lee” on January 8. Rapha Wicky made a brief appearance, but it was primarily a back-and-forth between Lee and Jake Reid. Lee was providing context for decisions made since he took over the role, as well as discussing some restaurants he had been trying since moving to KC. Members present were provided a platform for comments and questions.

Lee was open, diving into his intentions to structure Sporting with the 2 DP, 4 U22 roster option to gain the added $2m in allocation. He also spoke to his intentions to strengthen the scouting department, citing the narrow scope of player searches in the years preceding him, as well as reinforcing the need for a strong data analytics team to help with the players’ quantifiable development.

He also discussed the need on the roster for a true leader and added that there will be a leadership council this season. The council will serve as a bridge between Wicky and his coaching staff and the rest of the players. He mentioned that Pulskamp has strong leadership qualities but may need some help harnessing them to be more impactful, as well as Jovelic, who leads less vocally but more by example through intensity and passion on the pitch during matches and in training.
