Sporting Kansas City Releases 2024 Schedule; Messi coming to Kansas City
Sporting Kansas City announced their 2024 schedule on Wednesday, revealing the dates for matchups with Lionel Messi and Inter Miami, defending MLS Cup Champions Columbus Crew and three bouts with rivals St. Louis City SC.
Sporting KC will open 2024 against the team that closed 2023 as they travel to the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, February 24. Their first home match will be against the Philadelphia Union a week later on March 2. On March 30 Sporting KC will take on Toronto FC for the first time since 2019.
Inter Miami will come to Children’s Mercy Park on April 13, providing fans the opportunity to see Lionel Messi in person for the first time in Kansas City. The week after will be Sporting’s first 2024 match against St. Louis City SC, whom Sporting KC met five times in 2023, beating them three times including in the MLS Cup playoffs.
The league will take a break from the regular season from July 20 to August 24 for the second edition of the Leagues Cup, which will pit MLS and Liga MX teams against each other. That schedule is forthcoming.
Sporting KC will then end the regular season at FC Dallas. Sporting will play every Western Conference team at least twice, once home and once away, and will play Minnesota United FC and St. Louis City SC a third time. They will also face six Eastern Conference opponents.
The full schedule is below, alongside times subject to change.

What are the chances the Inter Miami game gets moved to Arrowhead?
Hopefully zero.
Agreed. It’s going to be bad enough with the stadium being invaded by people who aren’t fans of anyone other than Messi. Don’t want to punt home field advantage to move to a cavernous NFL stadium.
The best argument for doing so is increased revenue, but does anyone really think we’ll see a specific improvement in the team from those Messibucks? It’ll just get pocketed or swallowed up in general expenses.
I sorta took at week off from KCSJ, so not sure who will see this very late reply.
But I actually think they should move the game. Sure, homefield might be lost. But how many times do you get to see a living legend? More people will get the chance this way. SKC will make more money (which hopefully they’ll spend on the team).
Plus, I’ve never been to Arrowhead somehow.
Jumped in to check ticket prices after the announcement. $459 was cheapest I saw, in an admittedly perfunctory search. Just, wow!
I couldn’t disagree more. First, it’ll cost SKC money to rent and operate arrowhead for a day.
Second, SKC isn’t in the business of making Leo Messi fans happy. They’re in the business of winning trophies and being a competitive team. You don’t do that by placating people who are just there to see Leo Messi play. I truly don’t care if any Messi fans are able to see the game or not. I want my team to pack the stands with fans there to see my team play and win. Not root against my team so they can see Messi play.
I’m 100% with David on this.
Now, if there was actual value for OUR fans and team, maybe. A good example is what Union Berlin did this year for their first appearance in the Champions League. They made the difficult decision not to play their home games in their normal smaller stadium, but in a much larger Berlin stadium (home to local rivals) so that more Union fans could have the possibly once in a lifetime chance to see their team live in CL. It was controversial but they really did get massive crowds of Union fans, though they also had a terrible run and everyone said it wasn’t the same as playing in their normal intimate setting.
But in this case there’s no value for SKC or its fans. It’s offering a one-time chance to see an opposing player(s), and as I already said, I doubt we’d see any specific benefit from the increased revenue. If this were a friendly, sure. Not as a league match in which results and home-field advantage matter. Not for a league-coddled team that’s bending, if not outright breaking, roster rules to be a media darling and that already thinks it’s above the rest of us plebes.
One example of when I’d be ok moving a competitive SKC game to a larger stadium? I think the third SKC/STL match each year should be played at MU’s football stadium in Columbia. Halfway between each city, a pretty easy trip either way, it’d be an amazing afternoon game with a college football atmosphere. And neither team would be giving something up since each would have a normal home game and the setting would be neutral for both. But again, that’s not the same as giving up our home to placate Messi fans so ownership can pocket some extra money.
I like your MU idea for SKC/STL, but someone is still giving up a home game.
As for the Messi/Arrowhead thing, maybe SKC makes some new fans. I’m sure they did that playing Manchester United (and beating them), even though that was a friendly.
Move it. Beat Messi. Win new fans. Presumably make a lot of money. Yes, renting the field would come at a cost, but the value on the Messi tickets is mostly tied up in the resale market. They could make more on the front end sales, I’d think, by having way more seats available.
And KC fans are loyal. Some Messi only people will be there, but I think it’d still be majority SKC people hoping to see their team win AND see Messi.
Someone’s giving up a home game, but part of the value of the MU thing is that it balances out. Otherwise, every year one of STL or SKC gets an extra home game over the other. And there’s a good chance that each would derive good revenue from that neutral-site matchup, rather than one of the other getting a big boost each year.
Personally I think you’re kidding yourself that an Arrowhead game would be mostly SKC fans.
I’m all for the MU idea. I think, based on expansion excitement, there would be more St. Louis fans there right now. But that new toy feeling will likely wear off eventually.
The thing is, I think if St. Louis keep their current coach/GM for a while, they play a style that will always be competitive and they’ll not suck as much as I’d love them to.
This just simply isn’t what happened with Bale and Zlatan. I think you’re hoping for something that will not happen.
Really curious who’s downvoting me but upvoting you for agreeing with me.
Sorry, I’m definitely not going to help with this. I’m using messi ticket money to plan world cup tickets.
I suspect that’ll be the case for many STM. So, you’ll have a smaller stadium, less money, less fans but a lot of people just there to see Messi.
Moving to Arrowhead doesn’t price out your average fan either.
I’m fine with SKC fans robbing Messi fans blind on the resale market.
Looks like MLS/Apple are sticking to their guns and putting every game at the same time on the same day again, except for a few handouts to national channels. Pisses me off. Didn’t listen to a thing supporters said.
Agreed. Weird that they didn’t learn from this.
However, if they do a proper Redzone style show it could sorta make up for it. Have the shitty one they have now and if you pay, you get no ads and almost all soccer.
Not really. MLS360 doesn’t help if you ever plan anything on a Saturday night other than soccer. That’s the basic problem.
Well, there is your problem. What else is there to do on Saturday nights except soccer?
