Sporting KC signs Cielo Tschantret as a Homegrown Player
Midfielder Cielo Tschantret signs with SKC
Sporting Kansas City added 19-year-old midfielder Cielo Tschantret as their latest Homegrown Player. Sporting KC signed Tschantret to a two-year MLS contract through 2027 with club options for 2028 and 2029. Tschantret is the 23rd Homegrown Player signed from the Sporting Kansas City Academy and the fourth Homegrown signed in the last year.
Tschantret came to Kansas City from Baltimore, Maryland, where he grew up to join SKC’s Academy in 2020. He was a standout player for the Academy at the U-15, U-17, and U-19 levels. He then signed an MLS NEXT Pro professional contract with Sporting KC II in 2024, where he scored six goals and an assist across 56 matches for the team as both an amateur and a professional.
The young midfielder saw his role and time consistently grow for Sporting KC II. Tschantret had earned the captain’s armband for the 2025 season. Previously, he had mostly played as a midfielder, but in 2025, he saw a lot of minutes as a center back for SKC II. SKC’s second team had a very short roster, and players had to adapt abd play ouy of position. He often earned praise from his coaches for the effort and skill, despite the moves in position and roster that struggled to compete.
Tschantret is the son of Sporting KC Academy U-18 head coach Lee Tschantret. His father played in Kansas City from 1994 through 1997 for the Kansas City Attack.
The move gives Sporting Kansas City a total of 14 players on the roster. It will be a big step up for Tschantret, but he has often trained with the first team while he was in the Academy and with SKC II, so the jump will not be a total surprise.

Thad, or anyone else, do you have any more insight on his playing ability? I know you follow the second team more closely than most and I’m curious where we see him slotting in for us.
He had to play out of position at CB a lot this year and struggled (I mean, SKC II were terrible, everyone struggled). At defensive midfielder he’s a LOT better. Now, I question how easily that’ll translate to MLS though. It’s a tough spot to play and now the team has two very young d-mids (he and Bartlett).
BUT, Busio sometimes looked out of place at SKC II because the guys around him didn’t do the things they were supposed to do and that type of player is relying on the movement and runs of others to make their game shine. I am definitely not comparing him in any way to Busio, they play the game very different, but I’m interested to see if he shines with more talent next to him.
