Across State Lines: Kamara Retires From International Soccer

More teams are qualifying for next summer’s World Cup, and at the same time more teams are being eliminated from advancing. One of those teams who won’t be advancing is Sierra Leone, who finished third in Group A of CAF World Cup qualifying. They closed out qualifying this past week with a loss to Burkina Faso and a win over Djibouti. Ahead of their game against Djibouti, former Sporting KC forward, Kei Kamara, announced that the game would be his final one for his nation. Kamara has previously announced his retirement from the national team only to return later, but this time appears to be permanent. Kamara has a checker history with his country as in the past having previously been suspended by the federation before eventually returning. He’s gotten to represent his country in World Cup qualifying, African Cup of Nations qualifying, and in 2021 got to represent his country in the African Cup of Nations, the first time Sierra Leone had qualified for the tournament since the mid-1990s.
