Sporting KC
What We Want to Happen Today 9/30, 10/1
Sporting Kansas City are in the final stretch of the season and just two points outside the playoffs ahead of today’s game against St. Louis City. With a number of teams still having games in hand on Sporting, KC is still relying on some help and teams dropping points to get into the playoffs. Here’s a look at today’s other games in the league and what KC fans probably want to root for in those games.
Columbus vs Philadelphia
What we want to happen: Does not matter
Both teams have more points than KC’s max point total so the result doesn’t concern KC.
Miami vs NYCFC
What we want to happen: Miami win
The result allows Inter Miami to close the gap on Kansas City, but it also keeps New York City FC behind KC on points in case an eventual Sporting vs NYCFC MLS Cup.
New England vs Charlotte
What we want to happen: New England win
The New England Revolution have more points than KC’s max point total.
New York vs Chicago
What we want to happen: draw
Both teams sit on 34 points, keep both behind Sporting.
Orlando vs Montreal
What we want to happen: Orlando win
Another simple option, Orlando City has more points than Sporting’s max point total.
Toronto vs Cincinnati
What we want to happen: Does not matter
Sporting can’t catch FC Cincinnati, and Toronto FC can’t catch Sporting, so this result doesn’t affect KC at all.
Houston vs Dallas
What we want to happen: Houston win
Sporting has to hope there’s no US Open Cup hangover. FC Dallas holds the final playoff spot in the West, with two more points and a game in hand on KC. Sporting want Dallas to drop points.
Minnesota vs San Jose
What we want to happen: Draw
This is a tough one because one team is below Sporting (Minnesota United) and one team is above KC (San Jose Earthquakes). San Jose is three points ahead of KC while Minnesota is only one point behind. A draw ties Minnesota with KC, but it keeps San Jose close to KC on points.
Nashville vs Seattle
What we want to happen: Nashville win
East vs West, go East.
Colorado vs Austin
What we want to happen: Colorado win
Simple here, the Colorado Rapids can’t catch KC, Austin FC still can, so cheer for Austin to drop all three.
LA vs Portland
What we want to happen: Draw
This is a tough one because the LA Galaxy have two games in hand on Kansas City still and sit just four points behind. The Portland Timbers meanwhile have played the same number of games as KC and sit four points clear. A draw allows seventh place Portland a point, but also gives LA a point.
Vancouver vs DC
What we want to happen: DC win
East vs West, cheer for the East.
LAFC vs Salt Lake
What we want to happen: LAFC win
Technically KC can still catch both teams, but LAFC is in second in the West, with seven teams between them and KC. Sporting isn’t catching LAFC, so hope that Real Salt Lake drops points.
