Dropped points doom Sporting KC’s season

MLS Cup Playoffs hopes are virtually dead after dropping a total of 22 points from winning positions so far.

When the New York Red Bulls found an 89th minute equalizer on Saturday night, it brought Sporting KC’s total to 22 points dropped from winning positions this year. With just six games remaining, any hope for the MLS Cup Playoffs is virtually dead.

The parity in Major League Soccer often means four or five points can see a team jump several spots on the table. But Sporting KC find themselves buried far below the playoff line this year. In fact, had they held on to half of those 22 points, they would just barely be above the line in 9th place.

But it would lead to meaningful matches. It would have SKC set up for another late season run. Like last season, which culminated in one of the most memorable seasons in club history.

Incredibly, Sporting KC’s 22 dropped points doesn’t even top the rest of MLS. The last placed San Jose Earthquakes lead the way with 26. Additionally, both Portland Timbers and DC United have also dropped 22 points.

SKC were leading (at the bottom of?) MLS back in May, according to Tom Bogert.

Listen to this week’s Shade of Blue as we discuss the draw with the Red Bull, Alan Pulido’s first goal in 27 years, and Jake Davis fulfilling the Roger Espinoza prophecy.

Plus the KC Current get back on track with a 1-0 win. Will Temwa Chawinga win MVP of the NWSL?

The US Men’s National Team lost a disappointing match to Canada in front of a weak crowd at Children’s Mercy Park. Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly going to made official in the coming days.

One counterpoint I’d give you on the Cauldron getting to go is that anyone can buy a Cauldron membership, even if you don’t sit in the Cauldron. And I know people that have season tickets there, that don’t have a membership. So it’s a membership benefit.

Now, should STM get something like that? I think the case could be made, but I’m not sure other teams do ANYTHING like this at all.

Kcwookie

I would like to see lower ticket prices there reflect sporting Kansas City’s frequent inability to win, or even play good football.

SKC needs to do some real soul-searching and management change. The club is lost and I don’t expect anything to change given the current circumstances and leadership.

Thad Bell

Season Ticket Members pay far higher prices for tickets but do not get that benefit. East side does not get a club of their own although I believe after game they can go to the members club.

Joe Pacheco

Exactly one reason I didn’t renew after having them for 10 plus years!!

Good. This is on ownership. Vermes can’t manage worth a crud. Management thinks he can turn things around. He can’t. If he could he would have done it already.

The owners have the fans in an abusive relationship. They beat us down with profits over performance. At the end of the season they give us a peck on the cheek, saying we are the only fans for them and that things will be different next year. It isn’t and the beatings begin in March.

Vermes has to go. Where I don’t care.

GV dude

I agree. We saw the why yet again. We got scored on by a 16 year old because he had fresh legs. NY put so many bodies forward that Vargas would of had a brace if he was put on by the 70th. It’s painful to watch just how bad PV is managing.

PV is saving me time and money next year. Apple game pass for 2025 canceled. Zero interest in going to the stadium. Get us a manager and some players who care about winning and I’ll be right there. Until then, three years in a row of the same stuff.

For those who don’t know the PV playbook. Winter signings won’t even have one practice in when ccl starts. This means our current roster is the ccl. It will be PV signing someone a week before the first game or blaming it on visas. As if no one knew when the season started or who they wanted to sign. First half will be abysmal. Then he’ll try to squeak into the playoffs to grab premium ticket prices. The starting 11 won’t be able to walk, let alone run once mls starts overlapping ccl. Enjoy

Well like half the team is out of contract at the end of the year. So I doubt this is the team for CCL.

Mister Murse

We going to ignore the missed PK in the game? The fact that if vargas had been on late in the game, he could have taken advantage where pulido, Russell and salloi couldn’t?
The fact that Ronald on NYRB probably should have had a yellow by the 5th minute and then a second yellow when he finally earned his first?

As it went, the score didn’t reflect the chances NY had, but damn, that game would have been different if managed better by the ref and vermes.

Kcwookie

We don’t have the same refs every match, but we have the same Vermes. Our problems are homegrown, by an ownership that values profits over performance, and an ancient manager with a dismal record.

Yea, you know it’s bad when you can’t only blame the refs for the game. Ha!
