Can Sporting KC break a decade-long curse in Colorado? Get our full preview and analysis for the July 4th rivalry match against a depleted Colorado Rapids.

A Fourth of July showdown between two MLS originals, the Colorado Rapids and Sporting Kansas City, is set to deliver fireworks in the Rocky Mountains. This match has potential to be a significant turning point for both clubs, who enter the holiday fixture on different trajectories.
On one side, the Colorado Rapids are watching a once-promising season start to slip through their fingers. On the other, Sporting KC has mounted a resilient, never-say-die revival after a calamitous start. With the stage set (at altitude, always tricky), a simple question hangs in the thin mountain air: Can a depleted Rapids squad defend their home, or is this the night Sporting KC finally breaks a decade-long winless streak in the Mile High City?
The Colorado Rapids: A Promising Start, Now a Perilous Slide
A glance at the Western Conference standings shows the Rapids in the 8th spot, clinging to the next to last Wild Card playoff position. A closer look reveals a team in a precarious state. Their recent form (L-L-L-W-D) suggests a club in a slump.
This fragility was on display in their recent 3-3 draw against the New England Revolution. After storming to a commanding 3-0 lead, the Rapids collapsed, conceding an own goal, a penalty, and a gut-wrenching 93rd-minute equalizer to throw away two crucial points at home. The performance highlighted a team capable of offensive brilliance but undermined by defensive lapses and a lack of mental fortitude down the stretch. With Austin FC level on points, their playoff hopes are in jeopardy.
Sporting Kansas City: The Gritty Revival
Meanwhile, in Kansas City, the story is one of resurrection and hope. After an abysmal start, interim head coach Kerry Zavagnin has instilled a new identity built almost entirely on pure grit.
Though they still sit 12th in the West, this is not quite the same team from the opening months. Their recent form (D-W-L-L-W) showcases a group that scraps for every point. The banner headline for this was their stunning 2-1 win over Charlotte FC, where they scored in the 93rd and 96th minutes to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. They followed that by coming from behind again to secure a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Real Salt Lake. SKC is no longer an easy out; they are a formidable challenge for the full 90 minutes. This is a team that loves to give up goals early and score goals late.
A Clash of Style
This match presents yet another clash of coaching styles. Chris Armas employs a high-energy, relentlessly vertical system for the Rapids, focused on winning the ball and immediately launching an attack. They typically utilize a 4-2-3-1 formation, where two defensive midfielders provide a stable platform for the attackers to press and counter-press. The key to this system, Djordje Mihailovic (eight goals), is a major question mark after an ankle injury forced him to miss their last match.
Since taking the helm, Kerry Zavagnin has made SKC a more pragmatic and adaptable side. The old possession-based 4-3-3 has been replaced by a defensively compact and more direct approach. Zavagnin has shown a willingness to be tactically fluid, admitting he changed formations three times in the second half against RSL to grind out a result.
The embodiment of this new-look SKC is midfielder Manu Garcia. He is both a creative engine, ranking third in MLS with nine assists, and a scrapper, ranking third in fouls suffered. He provides quality in the final third while personifying the fight and spirit that has defined SKC’s recent turnaround.
Key Battles and a Decade-Old Curse
Head-to-Head History: For Sporting KC, a trip to Commerce City has been a house of horrors. SKC has not won a regular-season match in Colorado since March 29, 2014, posting a record of 0-6-5 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park since 2015. In last year’s Fourth of July meeting, the Rapids secured a 2-1 victory with a 94th-minute penalty from the now-injured Mihailovic.
Dejan Joveljic vs. Colorado’s Depleted Defense: SKC’s Serbian striker, Dejan Joveljic, is in fine form, tied for third in the league with 11 goals. He will be facing a Rapids backline close to crisis. Starting right-back Reggie Cannon is suspended for the match, forcing a change that could disrupt their backline’s chemistry.
To compound their defensive worries, anchor Chidozie Awaziem is just one yellow card away from a future suspension himself. Joveljic’s predatory instincts could force Colorado’s defense into a difficult choice: play the high line Armas demands and risk getting beaten in behind, or sit deeper and compromise the team’s entire defensive structure.
Manu Garcia vs. The Midfield Void: With Mihailovic out and energetic box-to-box midfielder Cole Bassett questionable with an ankle injury, Colorado’s midfield could suffer from a lack of both creativity and depth. This gives a player of Manu Garcia’s quality a dangerous amount of space and time to dictate the game and create chances.
Four Things to WatchÂ
- The 4thFEST Atmosphere: The match is part of the 29th annual 4thFEST, the largest public fireworks display in Colorado. The festival atmosphere could supercharge the home crowd, where the Rapids hold an excellent 14-7-7 historical record on July 4th.
- Colorado’s Makeshift Backline: The defensive woes in Colorado could be significant. Between injuries and suspensions, Colorado may be missing half of its starting back four, putting immense pressure on the replacements to handle SKC’s dynamic attackers.
- The Young Guns: With several veterans out on both sides, young players will have a chance to shine. For SKC, will we see minutes for 17-year-old center-back Ian James or 19-year-old midfielder Jacob Bartlett? For Colorado, 20-year-old forward Darren Yapi may be asked to carry a heavier creative load.
- Altitude and Attrition: The game will be played at altitude in hot weather, testing the stamina of both sides. This could play into the hands of SKC, a team that has scored nearly half of its goals (15 of 31) after the 60th minute.
Analysis and Prediction
On paper, Colorado has the home-field advantage and a decade of dominance in this fixture. However, the volume of their absences is hard to ignore. Missing their best creator (Mihailovic), a starting right-back (Cannon), and potentially their midfield engine (Bassett) would be a really big blow for them.
Sporting KC, conversely, is a team finding its form and brimming with confidence from recent late-game heroics. Sporting KC will be without Jake Davis, however, as he serves a one game red suspension. Led by an in-form striker in Joveljic and a creative force in Garcia, they are well-equipped to challenge a wounded opponent. All curses are made to be broken, and the Rapids’ personnel crisis provides the perfect opportunity for this one to fall.
On a night of national celebration, will the biggest explosion be the post-game fireworks or the sound of the Rapids’ season imploding? For Sporting KC, this could be an opportunity to light the fuse on an improbable second-half playoff run. While the Rapids have the better season-long record, momentum is a powerful force in MLS.
Prediction: Sporting Kansas City 2 – 1 Colorado Rapids
Dejon back in the lineup.
We’re lucky to be up like this. We need to just ride this wave into halftime and reset.
Wow, that pass from Bartlett was incredible. I’m very excited if he can keep growing and threading balls like that
Let’s go! Thommy plays hero ball too much, but that was exactly the right time to do it
Def worked that time.
I like the early subs too.
If we have a clean sheet Pulskamp could be team of the week 3 in a row.
I said this before the season started, but our wing play has to be improved. It’s wayyy too inconsistent. Shapi started off strong but has faded the last ten games. He isn’t aggressive enough going to goal in the final third. Salloi’s effectiveness on the ball has diminished, and Thommy can also be wildly inconsistent on the wing. We just have to raise the ceiling on our wing play. If we can grab someone who puts pressure on full-backs and center-backs, ala Johnny Russell, we would be in a better position. We are playing well this game, but it’s just too often we have wingers disappear in games (like Shapi this game).
Well done guys.
That wasn’t pretty, but we made it work. I know we have some games in hand, but we’re only 3 points out of the play in game…This makes up for some points we should have had at home.
