Sporting KC comes up short in LA
SKC could not continue their winning ways
Sporting Kansas City traveled to Los Angeles hoping to string a pair of results together after defeating Seattle last weekend. The LA Galaxy denied the bid for that second straight result with a 4-2 defeat of Sporting KC.
Manager Peter Vermes needed to juggle the lineup again with Daniel Salloi out with an ankle injury. Felipe Hernandez is unavailable after being put on administrative leave. Dany Rosero was available but still working his way back into the lineup. Alenis Vargas got the start at forward, Khiry Shelton at right back and Zorhan Bassong on the left.

The Galaxy took the lead in the 40th minute. Tim Melia made a pair of good saves as SKC defenders were slow to react. First a save on Gabriel Pec’s shot and then he stopped Dejan Joveljic once before the Galaxy striker poked it home.

The Galaxy doubled the lead in the 54th. This time Joveljic fed Pec for the goal. Robert Castellanos was defending Pec but the Brazilian attacker slid a ball through the SKC defender. Melia was screened and could not react quick enough to make the save.

Vermes made two subs to bolster the attack in the 61st with Wily Agada in for Alan Pulido and in the 65th with Stephen Afrifa in for Memo Rodriguez. Brining Afrifa in made an almost immediate impact with a goal a minute later. Erik Thommy drove to the end line and cut the ball back towards the center of the box. Afrifa one-timed it past the Galaxy defender and into the net for his first MLS goal. Afrifa has previously scored for SKC in the Open cup match versus Tulsa this season.

Sporting KC started to gain a little momentum but a turnover by SKC in the attack created a fast break the other way. LA’s Pec added his first assist for the evening when he crossed a well-timed ball to Joseph Paintsil for an easy goal. Vermes was not pleased with the turnover, “We lose a terrible ball again on the counter. Our team is pushing but you just can’t lose that ball. It’s not like it was a tough ball. It was a great pass, but we’re trying to be cheeky, we play behind the leg and we lose the ball.”

Both Agada and Nemanja Radoja had opportunities to close the gap but Galaxy defender Jalen Neal and keeper John McCarthy came up big for the home fans. McCarthy’s reaction save on Agada’s shot in the 80th minute was impressive.

A short couple of minutes later SKC did narrow the gap for the second time. Castellanos made the far post run and knocked in a Johhny Russell free kick. McCarthy got a hand on the point-blank shot but was unable to keep it out of the net for LA.

Sporting KC’s defense was again caught ball-watching as time wound down. Miguel Berry was beneficiary of another Pec assist as he slid a pass along the six-yard box. Berry stepped forward an easy tap-in goal to put the game out of reach.

The game ended 4-2 in LA’s favor, dashing hopes that the second half of SKC’s season would start on a strong note. Sporting KC returns home to face Real Salt Lake Wednesday evening. Salt Lake sits on top of the Western Conference and will be another tough match for Kansas City.

I’ve been a pretty vocal VermesOut person, but that said: our roster is just not very talented, period. There was a stark contrast in the quality of players that LA fielded last night versus us. I mean, some of our players look like they’re USL level or lower. I’m still VermesOut, but even if a new manager walked in tomorrow, I’m not sure they would get that much more out of this group.
And yes, Vermes is at least partially responsible for the current state of the roster, so I’m not letting him off the hook or anything. Just saying what we probably already know, which is the problems go beyond him. I hope Illig is serious about the “rebuild,” and perhaps he’ll rethink whether Vermes is in fact the right person to lead it.
Well hearing Vermes say that they are three transfer periods away from having a strong team is a pretty good sign that he realizes that he done messed up. But yes I don’t know how many of these players I’d want on my future roaster. Thommy earns his keep. Oddly Memo too. Timmy had a good game but at 56 years old he’s got to be replaced. I hope they made Shelton walk home.
Which is worse? I high priced striker that does little-to-nothing but is more clinical? Or a lower value striker that creates 10x the opportunities but finishes a fraction.
Pulido’s xG is 2.1, whereas Agada’s is 6.4!
Our offense sparked with subs, but to me it would have made more sense to have Jake Davis in the midfield and thommy on the wing. Our games that were the most prolific involved Thommy as a winger.
I don’t care what anyone says, I’ll take Agada over Pulido right now. I don’t care that he’s missing shots, it’s 1000x better than Pulido not even taking shots, or doing literally anything except lightly jogging around.
Shelton is a liability for the most part, but I think I’m at the point where I’m more upset as a fan to watch Pulido keep being played than I am to watch Shelton being played, and that’s coming from someone who didn’t watch a few games last year and the year before simy due to Shelton being started over and over.
I don’t disagree. Just the disparity between the two confirms what most people think/see: with agada on, something might happen. With pulido it is just awkward silence.
Curios to now if anyone else think some of the players have given up and are just going through the motions. I just cant get over how useless Pulido has become, not just him but he makes to much money to be that worthless.
Pulido stopped trying when he renewed his contract. His goals have been 4? Since renewing? Abysmal. Essentially an entire season with only 4 goals.
Yes, it’s hard to run with full pockets. I didn’t think it was harder to coach with full pockets, but PV did the same. Cashed a 5 year extension, immediately the worst the team has ever been.
Goal and wins don’t matter. It all part of the plan.
He’s been more productive than Vermes.
I was at the last home game and the amount of empty seats on both sides of the stadium more stunning. If the players haven’t given up, I think the fans are giving up. Verm should’ve been fired years ago. He is fully and totally responsible for this team, and the total muck up this year has become.
Prior to this season, I missed (was in town but didn’t go) only 1 game since 2009. I’ve already missed one this year. I think I’m going to miss Wednesday too. I wish SeatGeek didn’t have its artificial floor. I’d like to see just how worthless tickets are. I’m still seeing pairs of good East Stand tickets going for the $28 (fees included). Sit anywhere you want for $33.
I mean if I were a player and I read Illig’s statement, I’d probably give up, or be right on the edge. What kind of organization thinks the way to start a turnaround is talking about how you’re going to offload a lot of players in the off season (that’s what was alluded to) while also being fully bought in on keeping the guy that brought those players in and is the one at the helm while the team is historical lt bad.
