Unbeaten streak continues: KC Current win 1-0 in Utah
A 40-minute weather delay meant a late start to the KC Current’s first visit to Utah, a meeting with two clubs sharing a bit of history as both cities saw the ending of their NWSL clubs, only to return under new ownerships. But that is only where there are similarities end as the season has been drastically different for Utah and Kansas City. The Current came into the game unbeaten and continued that streak with a 1-0 win, and Utah has yet to win a game since March 22.
Starting XI
Nichelle Prince earned her first start of the season as Vanessa DiBenardo started off in the bench. DiBenardo would substitute at the start of the second half for Prince. Bia Zaneretto was also available, returning after a foot injury that kept her out for four games.

First half: No goals, but KC was close
The score did not tell the tale, and Utah was lucky that this was not 2-0 at halftime. Alas, the Royals had some magical defensive stops to keep the Current scoreless, shutting down Temwa Chawinga on a few occasions, including a wide open shot that hit the crossbar in the 8th minute. Later in the 30th minute, Chawinga again had a wide open net, but Utah defender Lauren Flynn headed it out of the way. Chawinga finished the night with nine shots and five on target.
Utah did maintain the majority of the possession, but offensively, it was all Kansas City with 15-2 on shots, and 4-0 shots on goal for the first half, and 24 total shots on the night and eight on goal.
Worrisome note: In the 26th minute, defender Gabrielle Robinson went down with a knee injury and left the game. Elizabeth Ball took her place. Robinson will be evaluated in Kansas City when the team returns from the trip.
Milestone note: Lo’eau LaBonta became the first player in KC Current club history to record 5,000 regular season minutes.
Second half: Goalscorer record broken
Elizabeth Ball would become an important player in this game, becoming the Current’s 15th goalscorer, which would set a new NWSL record for most goalscorers in a single season. In the 58th minute, the Current were in the final third trying to break the 0-0 deadlock, and a series of passes from Debinha to LaBonta to Claire Hutton to Ball resulted in the Current’s first and only goal of the game.

I’m trying to decide how concerned I should be about the Current’s inability to put away chances. The xG for this match was 3.1 goals for KC and 0.2 for Utah and it seems like a bad sign that the Current scored over 2 goals fewer than they would have been expected to. It seems somehow telling that the last two tallies notched for this squad were done so by center backs. We need the attackers to rediscover their scoring mojo!
Regression to the mean? They were outpacing early in the season.
I’m hoping the return of Bia will lead to good things. She was mostly invisible tonight in her 19 minutes (so. much. stoppage. time), and they should have really played it up to her for some holdup play, but they’ll get back to that, I’m sure.
What I’m worried about is Gabby. My mind immediately goes to ACL and the season being over.
Stine has come into her own. Ball is a proven commodity. It’s good to have Lauren available too, so it’s nothing like last year. But it’s something to watch.
It all seems frustrating af, but they are still pulling down points. 24-4 shot advantage and only 1 goal though. It seems like teams have figured Chawinga out a bit. At least they aren’t letting a Route 1 ball beat them. I want to say her touch leaves a lot to be desired, but then you see her pull a long pass down at full speed right to her feet and you’re like, wow, great touch there. It’s just in the box it fails her. Maybe she’s just pressing. You can argue they keep coming up against keepers standing on their heads, but she left three goals on the table.
You keep hearing when Bia gets back, she’ll draw attention and give Chawinga more space, but Vlatko’s gonna have some tough decisions. Debhina’s best in the middle, but she would get pushed wide or dropped into mid. Then what do you do with Cooper. Dibernardo has been KC’s best player – she’s gotta be in. Everyone loves what Hutton brings as a Dmid, but what do you do with Lo. And Hannah Glas is supposedly finally ready. It’s a great problem to have, but Vlatko needs to keep pulling the right strings.
It’s still weird that Ball had not been seeing the field. Anything official on Robinson?
Elizabeth is money, and imo deserves more playing time.
Hailey getting a card at 90+7 is also good to see. There’s nobody in the league tougher than her.
Maybe Rose Lavelle.
I can’t wait to see Desiree starting on the home pitch.
The Current have a wealth of talent and a coach that I can’t comment about because I still don’t understand the offsides rule.
This is a magical season and I’m happy to be here.
