MLS xG-Elo Power Rankings: Nashville Hot While SKC Finds a Pulse
The early-season gridlock is gone. See how Nashville and Miami surged to the top, while Sporting KC clawed out of last place in this week’s xG-Elo power rankings update.
Welcome back to the weekly breakdown of Elo ratings, expected goals, and power rankings.
We’ve crossed into mid-May, and the gridlock we saw at the top of the table a few weeks ago is gone. The West Coast powerhouses stumbled this week, opening the door for some Eastern Conference heavyweights to take control.
Let’s dive into a wild week of Elo swings.
The New Royalty: Nashville and Miami
There is a new #1. Nashville has claimed the top spot, jumping two places with a solid +4.6 point boost on the back of an undefeated five-match run (WDDWW).
Right behind them, Inter Miami is roaring back. After a stumble a couple of weeks ago, the Herons vaulted three spots up to #2 overall, grabbing +9.1 Elo points while on a three-game winning streak.
Those clubs were able to claim the top spots because the former leaders all hit a wall. Vancouver, San Jose, and Seattle all suffered brutal Elo losses in the -15 point range. When you are rated that highly, the system expects you to dominate, and when you drop points, the algorithm is not forgiving.
Sporting KC: Out of the Basement
Rejoice, Kansas City fans! The math is finally trending in the right direction.
For weeks, we’ve talked about how stuck SKC was at the bottom of the table, trapped in an abyss where the xG-Elo rating system expected them to lose every match. But after a gritty stretch culminating in back-to-back wins (LDLWW), Sporting KC has officially escaped last place.
They jumped up to #29, leaving the Philadelphia Union alone in the gutter. SKC posted a +17.5 point gain, the highest jump of any team in the league this week. It’s a long climb back to league average, but for the first time all season, there is upward momentum.
Around the League
Colorado’s Collapse: The Colorado Rapids absorbed the worst hit of the week in terms of placement, plummeting seven spots down to #21 after bleeding -10.8 points.
Texas Two-Step: FC Dallas and the Houston Dynamo both had big weeks. Dallas solidified their spot at #7 with a +15.2 point jump, while Houston mirrored that  +15.2 point gain to crack the Top 10.
Charlotte’s Rebound: Charlotte FC is making a push to get back into the upper-middle class, jumping three spots to #20 with a strong +11.0 point performance and a crucial win.
Here’s the full table as it stands today.
Parting Thought: The biggest takeaway this week is how quickly the math can punish complacency at the top. Vancouver, San Jose, and Seattle learned the hard way that when you’re the favorite, you have to win. Meanwhile, SKC showed that a couple of solid results can violently snap you out of an Elo death spiral.

I am seeing different results on the external site and on this post?
Yeah, that’s a great comment actually, thank you! So my external site actually uses all historic data! I should probably clarify that. Early on it made more sense to benchmark things to historic data, but MLS teams tend to go through a lot of change in the offseason and now we’ve enough games that the 2026 only data “feels” better.
There are a few different variations I’ve played with:
All data (historic) – https://jough13.github.io/xG_Elo/
2026 only – https://jough13.github.io/xG_Elo/mls_2026.html
The American soccer pyramid (MLS, USL-C, USL-1, and clubs that have participated in the USOC) (historic data) – https://jough13.github.io/xG_Elo/xG_Elo_USOC.html
NWSL (all data) – https://jough13.github.io/xG_Elo/nwsl.html
and
NWSL (2026 only) – https://jough13.github.io/xG_Elo/nwsl_2026.html
This is awesome! Bookmarking the 2026 ones 🙂 You should put these variations as links on the footer of each one. Very cool to see how crazy dominant KC is in the lifetime NWSL one.
Yeah, that’s good feedback, I’m already brainstorming for next week! Thanks much!
