Preview:
Sporting Kansas City is in the midst of a three-games-in-eight-days road trip and now head to St. Louis for a rivalry matchup at Energizer Park.
SKC started the stretch of away matches with a loss against the Portland Timbers despite a slight edge in the possession battle. Tactically, Sporting had a bounce-back performance after their 1-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy that saw them make history by winning without registering a shot.

It was also an improvement from the last matchup against Portland at Children’s Mercy Park where they lost 4-2.
The previous match with St. Louis was at home which ushered in the start of the Kerry Zavagnin era as interim head coach. It was also his first ever MLS regular season win.
Since taking over, Sporting KC has gone from battling for bottom of the west, to 12th with a realistic eye aimed at playoff contention.
With Zavagnin at the helm, the club is 3W-0D-3L with wins coming in different ways. Saturday’s match against the Timbers was the first time the team was shutout during that stretch.
A win against St. Louis would not only add to the club’s bragging rights over their rival, but it would also create distance between the two clubs in the table.
SKC and STL sit tied on points (10) and goal difference (-5), with the next tiebreaker being goals scored in favor, which SKC has the edge 17 to 9.
That being said, St. Louis has not won a regular season match since March 15 against the Seattle Sounders. Manager Olof Mellberg will not be on the sideline for STL, due to a suspension for yellow card accumulation. They will also be without German midfielder Eduard Lowen who is sidelined with injury. However, standout goalkeeper Roman Burki will return in goal.
Emotionally, Wednesday’s match will be intense, but it will have to be short lived as they return to the West Coast on Saturday for a match against expansion side San Diego FC who have regained their footing with a two-game winning streak after a three-game losing streak.
