KC Current
Back to CPKC Stadium, back to victory; Current win 4-1

Returning to CPKC Stadium after back-to-back losses on the road, the Kansas City Current hosted Bay FC, hoping to get back to their winning ways of the beginning of the season. And after changes in the line-up in the last two games, Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski returned to a more familiar and the usual starting XI, with Hailie Mace earning her second start of the season instead of Ellie Wheeler at right back.

The return to CPKC Stadium was needed and important. Post-game, Andonovski said, “I know it sounds weird, but losing those two games were probably the biggest motivation for this one.” Without a doubt, a win was necessary to avoid falling out of form and out of the top of the standings, which the Current held after the Orlando Pride lost last week as well. Orlando regained it last night after their 1-1 draw at North Carolina, though.
Kansas City plays so much better at home, and they are undefeated at CPKC Stadium this season, so it was no surprise, with the crowd behind them, that they began this game attacking early. Within minutes, Clarie Hutton took a shot at close range that went wide. It was in the third minute that KC took the early lead as Bia Zaneratto won a loose ball that Mace sent forward and took a couple of touches before sending it in for the first goal of the game, and her second of the season.
The footwork and the strike by Bia Zaneratto 😮💨
Half hour later, the Current tripled their lead as Debinha recorded a brace (her fourth in her career), proving once again this season that she is back in top form, scoring five goals for 2025 so far and 52 career regular season goals. She moved to seventh place on the National Women’s Soccer League all-time scoring leaderboard. Debinha also currently ranks third among active players on the all-time list for goals scored.
In the 33rd minute, Debinha received a pass from Hutton to give the Current a 2-0 lead. While Bay FC players called for an offside, there was no review, and the goal stood. For Debinha’s second goal, the Current were awarded a free kick after a Bay FC foul. With a direct kick opportunity a few yards outside the 18-yard-box, Debinha sent the ball towards goal, curling it towards the upper left corner.
Claire Hutton to Debinha! Right place, right time 👌
Absolute brilliance from Debinha off the free kick 🎯
In the second half, the Current came back determined to continue their first half dominance, but it was Bay FC in the 55th minute who scored a goal of their own and made it 3-1. Bay’s Penelope Hocking managed to just get a shot off in close range after a corner kick as Mace fell to the ground and couldn’t fully defend. But the Current were not satisfied with the score, and it was Temwa Chawinga who cemented the win in the 61st minute, scoring her fourth goal of the season, receiving an assist from Mace. Chawinga, receiving the ball, headed it in front of her and did what Chawinga does best: use her speed to beat defenders, find herself in a one-v-one situation against the goalkeeper, and send the ball in for a goal. Chawinga has now scored in each of her first three regular season games against two different teams, the first being the Washington Spirit, and the second against Bay FC. She becomes the first player to reach that milestone.
Temwa Chawinga might be a superhero 😮💨
With the win, the KC Current returned to their winning ways with the 4-1 victory and regained the top spot of the NWSL standings. Their record at CPKC Stadium improved to 20-1-3, and they are the only team to remain undefeated at home. The win also marked Andonovski’s 90th career NWSL regular season victory, placing him at number two all-time. The Current head to face Orlando for a top two matchup in Florida against a team who had their number in 2024. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. CT Inter&Co Stadium in Orlando on Amazon Prime Video.
