For the Glory KC is back with the 32nd episode of the show! Now with one Sporting KC regular season win… finally!

On this week’s episode, Sporting Kansas City finally find a way to win a game and do it in unexpected ways by going on the road against the first place Seattle Sounders to take all three points on awful turf in the Pacific Northwest.

In addition, we talk about the letter from the KC Cauldron to Sporting KC Ownership, the front office, the coaching staff and the players (see it below if you missed it).

And because we can’t have too nice of things, we discuss the Kansas City Current losing to Angel City FC on the road, despite seemingly being hot on their way into that game.

Here is a quick rundown of topics (and approximate start times):

  • Sporting KC Win – 1:55
  • The KC Cauldron write a letter to the club – 34:08
  • The KC Current Lose – 44:41
  • Digital Crawl – 57:30

So speaking of Thommy, I mentioned it in the match thread, but that first half it looked like he was playing on the right side of the field (I haven’t gone back to watch.) I will say that both the goal and assist he came from that side of the pitch. I believe when he came here he started on that side. Reason I bring it up is throughout the season and in the second half of the game, he seemed to be playing on the left side. And with that he did not have the same impact on the game as he did in the first. Call it tired legs, Gadi not being there, etc, but I think the data will show that since last summer, Erik has a much better impact when on the right.

I totally agree with this. Given his history of playing wide left (either as a winger or a midfielder) it’s probably easier to slip into old habits and getting too far wide. This has created those congested areas with Salloi and the LB du jour that caused spacing issues and didn’t give anyone room to work. I think its a worthwhile experiment to keep him on the right side of the triangle for the near future regardless of who’s playing the other 8 and see if that keeps him more in the middle channels he needs to occupy. I also like the idea of putting him on Johnny’s side, who seems a more willing runner when the ball is in/around the opponent’s 18 than Salloi, who tends to come back for the ball more (though he makes more/better runs when we win possession farther back). Having Kinda and Pulido and their intelligent movement is also helping. I’ve been of the opinion that while he undeniably hasn’t played as well this year, Thommy is still a top 3 (I would argue top 2 overall) midfielder on this team and has the quality to play through the middle if other players’ off-ball movement gives him something to play to. I’m excited to see if this little flip will have a bigger effect than it would seem, and help get him back to how engaged he was organizing and moving the team last year when he got here.

I get the thought that Hernandez is more comfortable on the right. My question there is, who would you rather be more comfortable and thus more effective? My bet is Thommy.
