For the Glory KC is back with the 31st episode of the show! Still with ZERO Sporting KC wins in regular season play since this podcast has existed. It’s obviously not our fault, but I love to joke about it to get Sheena fired up.

On this week’s episode, Sporting Kansas City find a way to lose again, this time at home to the next worst team in the league, CF Montreal. Sheena and discuss the game, of course, but also the multiple chants that broke out in The Cauldron, including “Vermes Out” and “Hey, Peter, it’s all your fault.”

Despite the loss, it’s still not the worst start in MLS history. A distinction that seems to belong to the Colorado Rapids in 2019 who had just two points through 11 games. But SKC’s schedule is only getting harder, so just give it time.

Thankfully, it’s not all downer news as I get the chance to discuss the Kansas City Current and their big win over NJ/NY Gotham FC in a relatively dominant performance. Plus, Sporting KC II gets some love on this week’s episode, even if the results didn’t go their way.

Here is a quick rundown of topics (and approximate start times):

  • Sporting KC Lose Again – 2:15
  • Dom Dwyer isn’t Signing – 34:38
  • KC Current vs. Gotham – 41:35
  • SKC II Lose to Dynamo 2 – 46:47
  • Digital Crawl – 51:48

Vermes always has a canned response to chants: “I don’t hear it/pay attention to it.”

Yet he is acutely aware of fan behavior (when something was thrown). So he does know it, but has that response so he doesn’t have to address it.

Salloi had multiple chances to turn towards goal, chose to cut back and pass backward while at the top of the 18.

Russell can’t beat defenders, it isnt injury related. He does inspire teammates to play more passionately.

Pulido missed sitters. Oh sure, he is returning from injury and some grace is needed… but he is quickly eating up that grace. He doesn’t know where the goal is. I am unsure if he has even had a decent shot on target (minus his goal) since returning. He doesn’t even realize when he is in a goal-scoring opportunity.

Roger is so outpaced that he gives up on following his man (the first give and go on the first goal) and stood watching at the top of the box while 3 to 4 of their players could have scored.

Thommy and Walter are in similar boats. They can’t carry everyone. Walter has options moving forward, but thommy has very few forward options. I noticed he takes extra touches waiting for someone to make a run. Or cuts back if nothing materializes.

I won’t touch the defense – to me the defense will correct a lot when the offense can change the dynamic of the game by scoring.

I dunno. It is stupid to have zero messaging from skc ownership/leadership. That is symptomatic of a group that does not care about the current state. Injuries alone warrant a look at our trainers. Zero wins warrants a look at vermes and bliss.
We have nothing. Not even a “thank you for still coming to the games”.

Plus the Cauldron dude wanting to fight – telling others we can’t chant “vermes out”. Yet he doesn’t get removed. I think Cauldron leadership also needs to be putting out things and that silence has been deafening as well. Read the room. Stop going with chants that promote vermes. Capos need to stop telling people that “[they] don’t need to be here. I have seven kids and could be home right now”.
They seem as lost as the players. Motivating the depressed is hard.

Thank you, Chad, for devoting a few minutes to the Current’s victory yesterday. I’m a little curious why this site isn’t covering the Current more thoroughly. There hasn’t even been any sort of writeup/article about the Gotham match. I know that sounds like a complaint, but really what I mean it as is as an expression of gratitude for having a spot to consume information and engage in conversation about Kansas City soccer–and right now the KC soccer team I am especially excited about is the Current.
As you can tell from my moniker, I’m a Sporting fan through and through, but there are only so many times I can ingest articles, podcasts, comments about the sorry state of that team before I’m exhausted. Maybe others relish in piling on the complaints, but that’s not me. And fortunately, we have another top-flight soccer team in the city that is on a three-match win streak featuring identical 2-0 scorelines. Following yesterday’s win, I was eager to engage with other’s and dissect the team’s performance, but there wasn’t a spot to do that.
Even in this podcast, it feels so much like the Current are given second-class status–though I do agree with many of the points you mentioned. Beyond what you said, I thought the halftime substitution of Cooper for Larsson really paid off with Cooper’s pace and direct style of play. I thought that, while there were some shaky moments in the back, the defensive play of Soto and Robinson has progressed significantly over the past few weeks (it will still be great to get someone like Ball healthy though).
I also thought that if you compared the number of fans in the stands between the Current match and (at least the end of) the Sporting match, the women may be outdrawing the men at this point. I hope they can continue to get some more coverage.
Thanks!

Sheena

Hey! Thanks so much for listening. I think had I been on the last half of the podcast the KC Current segment would have been longer and the SKC II talk would have been shorter. With the timing of the SKC II game I didn’t have the time to record more. However, we usually talk about KC Current for at least 10-15 minutes. Not as much as we’d like but we aren’t sure anyone wants to listen to us for an hour and half or two, which I think we could easily do, haha! I know there are two KC current specific podcasts though. I think they are called Keeping Current and Spilling the Tea(l), someone please correct me if I’m wrong! Regardless, thanks SO much for listening! I’m sure as Sporting gets worse and the Current get better we will spend even more time. We definitely want to try and cover them equally, but since I’m new to KC Current I don’t always have a lot to say, but that will change!

This all makes sense, Sheena. I appreciate KC soccer discussion regardless, but am currently (ha, ha) especially engaged in our local women’s team. Keep the content coming!

Thanks for this peek behind the curtain, Chad. It’s disappointing that a team as exciting and full of potential as the Current don’t get more article clicks. As you said, hopefully that continues to grow (this summer’s world cup won’t hurt). I also never want to blame anyone on here for not providing more content. It’s too bad there’s not more money in this sort of site.
I don’t know at all how you all handle these things, but if you ever were again in need of someone to write up a Current match recap, I’d be happy to volunteer.

There are some podcast options. The SOB feed has Keeping Current. Cindy has the Tea(L). And Chadwick and Sheena typically give some love to the current.

I’m with you, XK. I reeely wanted to talk about that Gotham match. Chad & Sheena, you guys are doing a fantastic job. Chad, if people are skipping the end anyway, you can put whatever the hell you want there!

Sheena

Maybe we will just do two-hour podcasts each week. jk, I don’t think Chad would go for that! Thanks for these sweet words, we really appreciate it! We’re out here trying our best, and I’m learning wayyyy more about soccer than I ever intended to know, lol.
