Another Miserable Weekend in Kansas City Soccer
A look at losses by Sporting Kansas City to the San Jose Earthquakes and the KC Current to the Chicago Red Stars in duel road games.
For the Glory KC is back (though it is getting harder each episode) with the 27th episode of the show.
On this week’s first episode, Sheena and I once again are forced to discuss a Sporting Kansas City loss but this time, we get to talk about a KC Current loss too. We didn’t get to watch the games live but luckily (or maybe unluckily) the games weren’t spoiled for us during our social media blackout and we suffered through both games on Sunday morning. We give our thoughts, including on this new tactical wrinkle that saw Erik Thommy lineup on the right of the midfield (though he didn’t stay there consistently) instead of the left (see tweet below for image).
#SportingKC tried something new last night flipping Felipe Hernandez and Erik Thommy. It never got a big chance to get going, but Thommy still drifted left a lot, with his average position being on top of Hernandez.#SJvSKC pic.twitter.com/OYsSEadP0k

San Jose Earthquakes vs Sporting Kansas City: Player Ratings

I don’t want this to sound like I’m blaming her, but Franch has been poor so far. She started slowly last year too, so much so that Chad and I said that Miller should get a few more starts. The way AD played down the stretch makes that seem ridiculous, so here’s hoping she flips that switch soon.
Yep, I don’t disagree with that at all. I was openly saying here (and to folks near the team), that she needed to go to the bench. Then she got going and got back on the USWNT. You gotta think that 3rd keeper spot at the WWC is in jeopardy.
I have so many other Current thoughts, but I’m struggling to find the time to write lately. Or maybe it’s motivation. Supporting losing teams is a bummer. I do feel more confident in a KC Current turnaround though.
Regarding the beginning of the episode, I have to disagree. I know the point you’re saying, soccer doesn’t mean as much as other public topics to which I agree. But, my rebuttal would be that your podcast doesn’t also cover those issues. If your pod covered, say, gun control or some other hot button topics I would say sure there’s no need to get worked up or be upset about sporting. But people specifically come to hear your take on sporting, so I don’t quite understand the need to justify your take or podcasting style vs others because at the end of the day soccer doesn’t matter…..on a soccer specific pod. I agree you don’t need to scream into the void, but I don’t think there’s a need for, lack of a better way of saying it, looking down on others who do. In my 6ish years of actively following the team, sporting and the fan base have taken to heart how passionate of a fan base there is albeit maybe not as much lately. So, I guess I’m just not fully sure why it’s looked down upon when the fan base demonstrates that other than it doesn’t match what your feelings are on the current form. But I also concede that that passion can cross the line. My back and forth with bluetestament/kcsoccerjournal has been that those who tend to push back on the club narrative or aren’t as positive typically are ostracized for not doing so. I specifically remember instances where I, and others, raised questions of the club during that Leon beat down awhile back and through the 2019 and last year struggled and each time being labeled “gloomers” and belittled. Fast forward to present day, and those that did that are suddenly wondering how we got here/or now agree those questions were very real. I just think, like it’s not ok for people to come at you at your podcasting style, its also not ok to tell someone how their views on the club are lesser than yours.
Sidebar, sorry you spent 2 hours in the parking garage. I side eyed my buddy when he wanted to street park near record bar and walk over for free, but after hearing your parking nightmare I’m grateful now
I will say, it’s never my intention to belittle. If it was me, I apologize. It’s fine to have different opinions on the team (or anything really). And often, I know I reply in comments, but I try not to be mean, just point out counter-arguments. Last year it did prove to be true that KC had potential and they found it too late. I hope they find it earlier this season, though all signs aren’t pointing in the right direction.
I’m of two minds. Soccer doesn’t really matter, but I care really deeply about it. But being mad at me for not screaming is silly (I didn’t see those comments here, it was on Reddit I believe). Would you really listen to 45+ minutes of someone just screaming about something? That sounds like a nightmare (though people watch those sports shows, but this wasn’t yelling like that). I can be mad in the moment and have an outburst (I definitely yell at games or at the TV, knowing full well it doesn’t matter).
But overall, I’m gonna save the real, deep anger, for what really matters (which I think was Sheena’s point).
Nah, I’m just speaking generally in the past if you ever strayed the line it was met with a snicker. I appreciate that generally you find a middle ground. i generally follow most pods and find something I like out of all of them. I just don’t like that there seems to be this ongoing debate or drama within the fandom on whether you are allowed to be mad or not and how you are supposed to voice your opinion. Just like I don’t think Kevincho was wrong, albeit a bit of lashing out/emotional, I don’t think you’re wrong. I just don’t like passionate fans should be put down for being passionate, and passionate fans shouldn’t tell others what their passion should look like.
Where I draw the line is people attacking me. I keep my DMs open (which is good because of what I’ve gotten out of it but leads to me muting/blocking people too).
I just go days sometimes without looking at things because it’s too negative for me. Be negative all you want. Just don’t @ me or send it straight to me. I want to see people’s opinions, but it’s all too much sometimes.
I’m upset. I want the team to win. Others are upset, presumably they want the same thing (though I weirdly get this vibe some people want to be miserable, it’s weird).
It’s funny, because I think both sides feel attacked at times. I feel attacked for not being angry enough. Others feel attacked when folks disagree with some of their points.
We’re all probably a little defensive at times and up in our feelings. We’re human.
I think we should look at training. So many injuries are chronic, non-contact, and start minor then they turn serious. It also seems like a lot of players have midweek injuries instead of game-related.
