KC Current
KC Current win 2-0 at San Diego Wave to remain undefeated

After a week off for the international break, the NWSL returned for week four of the 2025 season. The Kansas City Current, coming off a 3-0 win over the Utah Royals in its last game before the break, headed to San Diego to face the Wave. With a 3-0-0 record before this game’s kick off, the Kansas City Current are the second NWSL team to open another season with three straight wins (the North Carolina are the only other team to have done that in 2017 and 2018). The San Diego Wave, in their last game at Snapdragon Stadium, had a three-goal performance, winning 3-2 versus Utah, but their last game resulted in a 2-1 loss at the Orlando Pride.
Starting XI news
One change for the KC Current: DiBernardo out for Prince. Gotta assume that moves Debinha to the midfield. #KCBaby

Chad was right. Debinha moved to the center mid position, allowing Prince to be the center forward. Vanessa DiBenardo was listed as questionable for this game (she subbed in the second half in the 76th minute for Claire Hutton).
Current take the lead early
By the 25th minute, it was all Kansas City, taking a 2-0 lead. In the 15th minute, it was Izzy Rodriguez who took the ball on the left side with plenty of space in front of her and barely facing any pressure from the San Diego defense. This allowed her to send a perfect cross to the box to Debinha, who sent a half-volley shot to goal, marking her third goal of the season and her 50th goal of her NWSL career. Debinha is now the eight player in NWSL history to score 50 goals, joining the list of Lynn Williams, Sam Kerr, Christine Sinclair, Alex Morgan, Ashley Hatch, Jess McDonald, and Megan Rapinoe to have reached that milestone. Not only that, Debinha is also the fifth player in NWSL history to score 50 goals and record 25 assists.
A volley finish that gives Debinha 50 goals in her NWSL career 🔥 @kansascitycurrent.bsky.social
The Kansas City attack did not stop soon after that goal. Three minutes later after Debinha’s goal, Claire Hutton, who has yet to score her first NWSL goal, but has come so close in her young career, took a shot from the top of the box. The ball deflected off San Diego defender Kristen McNabb for a corner kick, but the way the ball deflected, hitting McNabb’s arm, paused the game for a VAR check. The referee awarded a PK for Kansas City, and who else but Lo’eau LaBonta to take the penalty kick. LaBonta, of course, converted, giving Kansas City the 2-0 lead in the 25th minute.
A confident finish from Lo LaBonta 😤 No doubt that was hitting the back of the net!
As the first half was coming to a close, Michelle Cooper left the game with an ankle injury. It was a non-contact injury, and Cooper was in obvious pain. After the game, Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski said, “Michelle is getting examined as we speak. I should know once we’re done with the press conference.” So we wait to hear more on Cooper’s injury. Bia subbed in for Cooper, allowing her to continue her comeback in her second appearance of the season.
The second half was mostly San Diego attempting to erase the 2-0 deficit. Though they brought the pressure, they were unsuccessful. The xG in this game was 1.25 KC versus 0.64 San Diego. Lorena had quite the save in the 72nd minute when she kicked the shot with her right foot after a one-versus-one situation, sending the ball out of bounds instead. Lorena recorded four saves on the night and completed her third straight shutout. The Current are on a three-match shutout streak, tying it for the longest in club history. They have not conceded a goal since the season opener against the Portland Thorns.
The Current also tied the NWSL record for consecutive regular season wins with eight games. This is dating back to last season. Kansas City also becomes the fifth team in NWSL history to begin a season with four consecutive victories. The Current still trail the Orlando Pride for the top spot in the NWSL standings. The difference maker between the two teams is the goal differential which Orlando leads by one goal.
