KC Current
KC Current open 2025 NWSL season with a 3-1 win

The Kansas City Current returned to CPKC Stadium for the start of the 2025 NWSL season to face the Portland Thorns FC. The expectations for this club were higher than last year as the Current look to make another run to be one of the top teams in the league and finish with an NWSL title. It’s a long season though, and that’s why they play this beautiful game, but the Current have all the ingredients to have a successful season, retaining their core players and bringing in Brazilian goalkeeper Lorena to fill in the important goalkeeper spot after the departure of AD Franch and Amulth Schult.
This marked the second year in a row that the Current opened at home versus Portland, and like last year’s home opener, the KC Current did not disappoint the fans at a sold out CPKC Stadium, winning 3-1 on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon and starting the season with an important win.
Let’s give you the big-time game highlights:
Chawinga does Chawinga things again
The 2024 NWSL MVP and Golden Boot winner began her 2025 campaign scoring in the 3rd minute after a through ball from Debinha, giving the Current an early lead.
New year, same Temwa 🤩A beautiful assist from Debinha sets Temwa Chawinga up for her first goal of the season!
Michelle Cooper rocket goal
Michelle Cooper, now in her third year with the Current, holds the record for the fastest goal in NWSL history with 22 seconds, and she probably now has the goal of the week with this rocket of a goal in the 23rd minute. (Mind you, I have only watched this game this weekend, but it’s goal of the week for me, 100%)
COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOPPPP 🗣️
Debinha is back!
It took Debinha until the fifth game of the season last year to score her first goal. For the 2025 season? Game one. Denied a goal earlier in the game due to an offside call, Debinha would get her moment, making it 3-0 in the 36th minute.
IT’S DEBINHA’S TURN TO SCORE!
Portland would make 3-1 in the second half as Olivia Moultrie scored for the Thorns. The Current spent the rest of the game attempting a fourth goal with various passing sequences. Portland nearly made it 3-2 as they were awarded a penalty kick due to a handball, but Moultrie hit the crossbar, saving the Current from a close game late in the game in the 84th minute and starting the season on the right track.
