A Return to Soccer Coverage?!

The Wilkinson fallout and new controversy. Plus, a return to soccer coverage with Sporting KC preseason and a ton from the KC Current.

For the Glory KC is back with the 68th episode of the show!

Sporting Kansas City, against everything I personally expected, did the right thing and moved on from Gavin Wilkinson. But somehow, they still got that wrong. From the non-apology given by Mike Illig to Peter Vermes’ refusal to even entertain answering questions about the whole situation in Saturday’s press conference. We have thoughts!

We do get to actually talking soccer this time out though, getting into all the Sporting KC preseason news. From the roster to the schedule and the results of the first game. Plus, we catch up on that Kortne Ford signing that got lost last week. And did Roger Espinoza officially retire?

The KC Current are back in the news for many reasons. We catch up on their two trades and weigh in on yet another player being caught out by their trade. We also catch up on their rumored signings (Desiree Scott and Bia) as well as the 2024 NWSL College Draft.

In the Digital Crawl, we touch on the following topics:

  • 2026 World Cup Final location
  • Former KC players/coaches update (Busio, Nguyen)
  • A couple smart MLS trades from rivals St. Louis City and Real Salt Lake
  • KC Current staff announcements
  • Sam Mewis retiring
  • More NWSL Expansion for 2026

Here is a quick rundown of topics (and approximate start times):

  • Wilkinson is gone – 5:09
  • New controversy from the Wilkinson hire – 13:38
  • Sporting KC Preseason – 36:12
  • Sheena wants signings! – 44:29
  • Espinoza officially retired? – 50:48
  • Kortne Ford to SKC II – 53:40
  • Gautrat and Kizer Trades – 57:12
  • A Rumored three Current signings – 1:08:32
  • The NWSL draft – 1:12:28
  • Digital Crawl – 1:16:46

BTW — we know these last few pods have been long. Hopefully, with us back to doing non-special episodes of the show and putting two weeks worth of news into one pod, we can control the length a bit. Sorry y’all!

Completely unrelated, but our Instagram is full of nonsense lately. You should follow us. Here is a post of 10 of our failed podcast logos when we tried to use an AI generator. The guy holding the ball cracks me up every time. Feels like a kid soccer pick, but with an adult man.

Spotify took away our ads, so we turned on “Listener Support.” Don’t feel obligated, but if you have a few spare bucks and a fan of the pod, we’d appreciate your donation.

Big thanks to Splitter Conspiracy (listen to them here) for our theme music made with the permission of the KC Cauldron.

I've been covering Kansas City soccer since 2014, including Sporting Kansas City, the KC Current, SKC II and more. I'm based out of Kansas City, MO, but got my start covering SKC while writing from Phoenix, AZ.
