Across State Lines: Sweat Announces His Retirement

Published

on

This past week, former Sporting KC defender, Ben Sweat announced that he was retiring from professional soccer after a ten year professional career. Sweat started playing with the Columbus Crew after being drafted in the first round of the 2014 MLS SuperDraft. He only appeared once for the Crew and spent much of the season on loan with the Dayton Dutch Lions in USL Pro. He spent the 2015 and 2016 seasons with the Tampa Bay Rowdies after being waived by the Crew. In 2017 he rejoined MLS with New York City FC. After three seasons in New York, Sweat was selected by Inter Miami in the MLS Expansion Draft. After one season in Miami, Sweat was traded to expansion side, Austin FC. After having his contract option declined after the 2021 season, Sweat signed with Sporting ahead of the 2022 season.

Sweat spent a little over a season with Sporting, appearing twenty-nine times, starting twenty-six of those before being waived in April of the 2023 season. Sweat proceeded to sign with the New England Revolution where he finished out the season and his playing career. In his MLS career Sweat appeared in over 120 games and started over 100.
