Across State Lines: Espinoza Joins Des Moines USOC Run

One of the more talked about stories from the first round of this year’s US Open Cup was former US national team player, Sacha Kljestan coming out of retirement to play for the Des Moines Menace. Kljestan played the whole 120 minutes for the Menace in their match that ended 2-2 after regulation and won the shootout 5-4 over NISA side Capo FC. Former Sporting KC academy player, Leroy Enzugusi scored the second goal for the Menace and converted in the shootout.

Ahead of the second round hints were made that the Menace would add more known names for their second round matchup against USL1 side, Union Omaha. One name joining Kljestan and the Menace is former Sporting KC midfielder, Roger Espinoza. In an announcement on the club’s social media, Espinoza confirmed that he’d come play for the Menace in Omaha against the Owls. Espinoza will take the field tonight at Al F. Caniglia Field on the campus of the University of Nebraska Omaha for the Menace.

Also this week, former Sporting forward, Kei Kamara has a new club in MLS, as he signed for Los Angeles FC for the 2024 season with an option for the 2025 season. It’s the eleventh different MLS team Kamara has played for. Counting his short stop with FC Cincinnati during the expansion draft, Kamara has been on twelve different MLS teams. When Kamara entered the league in 2006, the league had just twelve teams total.

Here’s the rest of this week’s update.
