2027 Sporting KC Schedule Released
All 14 games of the special “sprint season” have been announced for Sporting Kansas City and the rest of MLS.
The 2026 Major League Soccer season isn’t quite over. Sporting Kansas City still have two games to play. But with the coming shift in the schedule next year, MLS is getting out ahead of the change by releasing the 2027 Sprint Season schedule quite early.
What is the Sprint Season?
In anticipation of MLS switching to a schedule that runs from summer to spring with a break in the winter, the league is squeezing in a one-off “sprint season.” Each MLS team will just play 14 games and only against their conference opponents. With 15 teams in each conference, that means Sporting KC will play either home or away, but not both, against each team in the Western Conference.
The top eight teams from each conference will qualify for a single-elimination MLS Cup Playoffs and the only Eastern Conference versus Western Conference game will be the 2027 MLS Cup.
After the sprint season is over, there will be some time off in the summer before MLS switches to the 2027-28 schedule for the foreseeable future.
Sporting KC Schedule Details
The season kicks off for Sporting KC on February 20th on the road in Houston. Considering possible weather issues, that makes sense.
However, immediately after that, the home opener for SKC is against the Vancouver Whitecaps on February 27th, when the weather in Kansas City could be quite chilly. Another northern based opponent, Minnesota United, will travel to KC the following week. February 27th is the earliest home game in the history of MLS regular season games, besting this season’s game against the Columbus Crew on February 28th.
One game a lot of folks have their eye on is against rival St. Louis City SC. Remarkably, despite Sporting KC having a terrible season, they have still never lost to St. Louis at Sporting Park. That will be put to the test on April 3rd, as STL will come to KC, but there will be no reverse trip.
There are three mid-week games in this very tight season. They are all triple game weeks, where the depth of a roster may be put to the test. Potentially the toughest of the three-game stretches over 10 days is from April 7th through 17th. All three games are on the road, starting at San Diego FC, then heading to Real Salt Lake and ending with Austin FC. That’s not the best three teams, by any means, but it’s a lot of travel.
The season wraps up with Sporting KC hosting the Portland Timbers on May 1st.
The entire season is played over just 71 days, including 11 straight Saturdays. Decision Day is on May 8th, but Sporting KC have a bye. With 15 teams, one team can’t play for each “matchday.” Minnesota United have their bye during matchday 1.
