Sporting KC Acquire Two Players on One-Year Loans

The transfer window didn’t close out exactly like Sporting Kansas City’s President of Soccer Operations, David Lee, would have hoped. There were grand plans of big spending moves.

Those didn’t happen (or haven’t been announced yet if they did).

But moves did go through. Today, the team announced the signings of two teenage players on loan from within Major League Soccer.

19-year-old forward Ruben Ramos Jr. will join from the LA Galaxy and 18-year-old forward Seymour Reid will join from Lee’s old club, New York City FC. Both moves are yearlong loans through the 2027 sprint season. And both deals cost $75,000 each in General Allocation Money (GAM) with an additional $50,000 in GAM available via “certain performance-based incentives.”

The difference is Ramos has an option in his deal to make the move permanent at the end of the loan. The press release from Los Angeles says the option is a “trade option.”

NYCFC make no mention of that but do list the ability to recall Reid from loan if he “does not meet a minutes threshold from now through the remainder of the 2026 season.” There should be plenty of minutes to go around at Sporting KC.

“We are excited to add Ruben and Seymour to the group on loan,” President of Soccer Operations & GM David Lee said. “Ruben and Seymour are two high potential players that have come through the MLS Academy system and have delivered performances that show they deserve opportunities to display their qualities at the next level.”

“Ruben is a regular with the U.S. Youth National Teams and has been one of the top performers in MLS NEXT Pro for several years, showing valuable versatility in attacking areas with excellent technical ability and a nose for goal. Seymour was one of the top young players in MLS NEXT Pro last season with 13 goals in 15 games who will provide different characteristics to our front line that will help us through the remainder of the year and the Sprint Season.”

Ruben Ramos Jr.

Ramos Jr. has 17 goals and seven assists in his professional career with Ventura County FC, the LA Galaxy’s MLS Next Pro affiliate. He joined the Galaxy first team in the summer of 2024 on a Homegrown deal. He has one goal in MLS so far, just recently in a game against CF Montreal. He’s played just 306 MLS regular season minutes so far in his career.

Ruben is also a member of the USMNT youth system, with call-ups at the U-15, U-16, U-17, U-19 and U-20 levels.

While the press release says he’s a forward, Transfermarkt shows he’s primarily played attacking midfielder and a little wide left midfield. In Rapha Wicky’s system, they are in need of guys that can play that underneath forward/midfielder role, which may be a fit for Ramos.

“[Ramos Jr.] was fantastic with the U-20s, and Galaxy fans were looking forward to seeing more of him, but Greg Vanney was reluctant to give him many minutes until recently, after outgoing transfers, injuries, and suspensions depleted the midfield. What Galaxy fans did see, we did like, and we were looking forward to seeing him evolve further. Without a doubt, Galaxy fans are upset to see him leave when he’s just getting started. If SKC gives him the minutes, he will become an indispensable and dependable player.”

Seymour Reid

Reid joined the NYCFC academy in 2024. He’s been off to a quick start, scoring 13 goals in 15 games for NYCFC II in 2025. He just moved to the first team in May of that year and scored his first MLS goal in September of last year against the Chicago Fire. He only has 180 first team minutes in MLS play so far but should increase that with SKC.

Seymour is a Jamaican who moved to New York as a child. He has represented Jamaica at youth and senior team levels. He has three goals and four assists for the U-17s and made the first team in October of 2025.

Transfermarkt lists Reid as a center forward, a position of great need with the departure of Dejan Joveljic. Taylor Calheira was currently the only player on a first team deal that officially plays that role.
