Match Overview
Sporting Kansas City enters Game 17 of 34, marking the exact halfway point of the 2026 regular season, coming off a 2-1 midweek victory over Minnesota United FC. Designated Players Dejan Joveljić and Manu GarcÃa provided the scoring output, while Stefan Cleveland came up big with six saves to secure the three points.
GarcÃa has been in fine form, extending his career-best streak to five consecutive MLS matches with a goal contribution. Meanwhile, Joveljić has found the net in back-to-back matches since the World Cup break, bringing his season tally to eight goals and two assists.
The task on Saturday, however, gets considerably steeper. Sporting KC remains winless in its last 10 meetings against LAFC across all competitions (0-8-2), a run that includes the heartbreaking extra-time loss in the 2024 U.S. Open Cup Final at BMO Stadium. On top of that, SKC is still searching for its first clean sheet of the 2026 campaign. A feat they came quite close to before giving up a late set piece goal against MNUFC on Wednesday.
Opponent Breakdown
LAFC enters Saturday flying high under head coach Marc Dos Santos (a familiar face in KC, having led the Swope Park Rangers to the 2016 USL Cup Final). Los Angeles comes off consecutive dominant performances post-World Cup break. First, a 3-0 El Tráfico win over the LA Galaxy followed by a 3-1 midweek victory over Real Salt Lake.
The primary danger for LAFC lies in their star Designated Player tandem:
-
Son Heung-min: The South Korean superstar leads Major League Soccer with 10 assists on the season and was recently named an MLS All-Star. Fresh off captaining South Korea at FIFA World Cup 26, Son has found an immediate rhythm.
-
Denis Bouanga: The Gabon forward continues to be one of the most lethal attackers in North America, leading LAFC with 13 total goals across all competitions this year. Both Son and Bouanga have scored in each of LAFC’s two matches since the league returned from the World Cup break.
Defensively, LAFC has been nearly impassable, leading the league with 10 shutouts this season. Nine of those shutouts belong to 39-year-old, former French World Cup winning goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

LAFC
LAFC currently rides a three-game MLS winning streak and continues to be one of the most formidable home sides in the Western Conference. Sporting KC, on the other hand, will look to take the defensive resilience shown midweek with new additions Or Blorian and Emir Karic and turn it into momentum on the road.

Predictions
Stopping LAFC’s attack will require a near flawless defensive display from Sporting KC. With Karic and Blorian working up to full fitness, it’s unclear if they will be available or how long they may play against LAFC. Containing the movement of Son and Bouanga in transition will be paramount, as will finding ways to test Lloris on the counter through Joveljić and GarcÃa.
Los Angeles don’t want the ball. During the 2026 regular season, they average just 46.5 percent possession. Kansas City are even lower, at just 44.2 percent. Sporting KC would be served to give up the ball and allow Calvin Harris and Capita Capemba to hit on the counter and avoid Bouanga running at the KC defense.
While the midweek win against Minnesota was a step in the right direction, taking points off LAFC in Los Angeles remains one of the toughest asks in MLS.
Prediction: LAFC 2, Sporting KC 1
