Published

on

This past week the National Soccer Hall of Fame announced the list of eligible candidates for selection to the hall of fame this year. Many former Kansas City players are up for selection this year, including two new candidates with ties to the KC area. One of the candidates is former Sporting KC defender, two time MLS Defender of the Year, and current Sporting KC II assistant coach, Ike Opara. The other candidate is former KC Current player, Diane Matheson, though she never actually played a game for the Current before retiring from professional soccer. The pair join four other former players on the player’s ballot for this year; Yael Averbuch (FC Kansas City), Brad Davis (Sporting KC), Brad Evans (Sporting KC), and Benny Feilhaber (Sporting KC, Sporting KC II head coach).

There are another fourteen players with Kansas City ties that are on the veteran’s list of eligible players for selection: Sean Bowers (KC Wizards), Jose Burciaga Jr (KC Wizards), Mike Burns (KC Wizards), Jimmy Conrad (KC Wizards), Kevin Hartman (KC Wizards), Frankie Hejduk (Sporting KC, though never signed), Chris Henderson (KC Wizards), Chris Klein (KC Wizards), Frank Klopas (KC Wizards), Alan Mayer (KC Comets, KC Wizards assistant), Mike Sorber (KC Wizards), Lee Tschantret (KC Attack, Sporting KC academy coach), Josh Wolff (KC Wizards), Kerry Zavagnin (KC Wizards, Sporting KC assistant).

Finally, on the builders list is Clark Hunt, the son of the founder of the KC Wizards, Lamar Hunt. The younger Hunt is still the owner of FC Dallas (and KC Chiefs) and has been active in KC’s hosting of the 2026 World Cup.
