Across State Lines: Number of Former Players Headed Towards Free Agency

Published

on

This past week, the MLS Players Association announced the list of players that are eligible for free agency this coming offseason. For those that don’t know, to qualify for MLS free agency, players must be at least twenty-four years old and have or more years of experience in the league. For Sporting KC, that means the team has five players that meet that criteria, Roger Espinoza, Kortne Ford, Kendall McIntosh, Johnny Russell, and Graham Zusi. Of those five though, McIntosh is the only one that is completely out of contract after the season as Espinoza, Ford, Russell, and Zusi all have 2024 options that the team could choose to pick up.

There a number of former Kansas City players who are eligible for free agency this offseason as well. In total, fourteen former Sporting players are eligible for free agency this offseason. Of those players potentially available though, only three of them are completely out of contract after the season. The other nine all have options on their contracts that could be picked up. Here’s the full list of former Sporting players eligible for free agency: Teal Bunbury (option), Eric Dick (option), Dom Dwyer (option), Erik Hurtado (option), Kei Kamara (OOC), Alec Kann (option), Jimmy Medranda (option), Oriol Rosell (option), Kelyn Rowe(OOC), Diego Rubio (OOC), Ilie Sanchez (option), CJ Sapong (option), Ben Sweat (option), Adrian Zendejas (option).

That leaves just four former Sporting players currently under contract for the 2024 season with an MLS team, Latif Blessing, Tyler Freeman, Jaylin Lindsey, and Luis Martins.

In other news this week, a few former players moved to new clubs recently, two of which I missed when they initially moved. The first is former Sporting HomeGrown Player, Brooks Thompson. The goalkeeper who has been with the Philadelphia Union II in MLS Next Pro moved to North Carolina FC on loan through the end of the season. The other player who recently moved is former Swope Park Ranger, and World Cup veteran, Jerome Ngom Mbekeli who moved to Moldova and joined FC Sheriff Tiraspol. The third player on the move was former Sporting academy player, Max Rugova who stayed in the NISA, moving from Gold Star Detroit to the Savannah Clovers.

As always, if you know a player I’m missing, or know where a player is that is listed at the bottom, please let me know.

Here’s the rest of this week’s update.
