Across State Lines: Sapong Announces His Retirement

Former Sporting Kansas City forward, and 2011 MLS Rookie of the Year, CJ Sapong has announced his retirement from professional soccer. Sapong played for Sporting KC from 2011 through 2014, winning a US Open Cup and an MLS Cup with Sporting while making 110 league appearances and 142 across all competitions. He scored 20 league goals for KC, which currently ranks him tied with Mark Chung for 16th all time on that list. He scored 27 goals for KC across all competitions, placing him 16th all time there as well. He also spent time with the Philadelphia Union, Chicago Fire, Nashville SC, and Toronto FC during his MLS career. He made 370 MLS appearances in his career and scored 89 goals in league play.
I cried in the shower this morning.
Not because I’m retiring from the game.
Not because I’ll miss scoring in front of thousands.
Not even because I’ll miss the locker room.I cried because of what’s next. 🧵👇
