Across State Lines: Nemeth Retiring at the End of the Season

Published

on

Former Sporting KC forward, Krisztian Nemeth announced this week that he’ll be calling time on his professional soccer career at the end of the season in Hungary. Nemeth, who is 37 currently plays with MTK Budapest, the club he started his professional career with back in 2005. In between Nemeth has had stops with Liverpool, Olympiacos, Al Gharafa in Qatar and two different stints with Sporting KC. In 2015 Nemeth helped Sporting KC to the US Open Cup over the Philadelphia Union, scoring the goal in the final that helped send the game to a penalty shootout that Sporting won. He returned to Sporting in the 2018 season after a trade with the New England Revolution. Nemeth’s second stint with Sporting didn’t go as well, acquired during the secondary window in 2018, Nemeth made just nine regular season appearances and scored one goal. He only appeared in one of KC’s four playoff games that year. In 2019 Nemeth was KC’s starting forward and scored eight goals. The problem was that three of those game in one game, a 7-1 win over Montreal. That game was on March 30th, the fourth game of KC’s regular season. Nemeth scored just three more times the rest of the season and only once in the final 23 league games.

Nemeth’s contract with KC expired at the end of the season and Sporting chose not to re-sign him. After a short stint in Slovakia, Nemeth returned to MLS, signing with the Columbus Crew. He was an unused substitute for the Crew as they won MLS Cup that year. After departing Columbus, Nemeth returned to Hungary were he’s spent the last six years, the last five of which have been with MTK. This season he’s been limited to just under 700 minutes in all competitions and has added two goals and four assists in league and cup play. As of this moment MTK is just above the drop zone and relegation to the Hungarian second division.

Once considered the future of Hungarian soccer when he made his move to Liverpool, Nemeth never quite reached the heights that was probably hoped but he’ll end his career with over 350 appearances at the club level and over 100 goals, adding in another 37 caps with the Hungarian national team and four goals. A solid career.

Here’s the rest of this week’s update.
