Juice Boxes and Post Game Stats: Russell Reaches Minutes Played Milestone

Sporting Kansas City continued their unbeaten start to the season, and earned their first shutout of the season in their 0-0 draw with Los Angeles FC at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. The Sporting offense hasn’t been able to get rolling yet, but the defense has continued to look solid to start the season. Here are the stats and milestones from Saturday night.

Tim Melia made his 251st start in MLS competitions, tying him with Kerry Zavagnin for 4th all time on that list.

Johnny Russell became the 14th player to play 15,000 minutes in all competitions for KC.

In the 14th minute, Russell passed Mo Johnston and moved into 15th place all time for minutes played in MLS competitions. In the 80th minute, Russell then passed Benny Feilhaber and moved into 14th all time on that list. He finished the game with 13,854 minutes played.

In the 60th minute, Russell passed Jack Jewsbury and moved into 14th place all time for minutes played in all competitions. He finished the game with 15,004 minutes played.

Russell made his 199th appearance in all competitions, breaking his tie with Feilhaber for 14th all time on that list.

In the 73rd minute, Daniel Salloi passed Jewsbury and moved into 12th all time for minutes played in league play for KC. He finished the game with 13,293 minutes played.

Salloi made his 156th start in MLS competitions, breaking his tie with Feilhaber for 13th all time on that list.

At 34 years, 116 days, Andreu Fontas passed Zavagnin and became the 15th oldest player to appear in a league game and all competitions for KC.

Overall It was great to see the guys put in a full 90+ mins. I would say it is detrimental in the long run though. There are very few players that can sustain that kind of wear and tear on a body. You start to realize when you hit the early 30s that you just aren’t as mobile as you use to be. I think a prime example of that was when the LAFC had that amazing breakaway and Memo was trying to catch them but couldnt get into that other gear of speed he needed too. Thankfully they did not score on that breakaway.

I honestly was a bit shocked we didnt see at least a couple of Subs for SKC. But I also understand that you dont want to disrupt your teams chemistry when it is such a hard fought battle.

It is great though to see the team in better form from the start, than it was last season. I will be intrigued to see what Vermees does with the transfer window this summer.
