The last time anyone could watch a Sporting Kansas City game was on October 19th of last year. That was a 2-1 loss to FC Dallas. Sporting KC ended their regular season then and have only played three preseason scrimmages since then.

The wait to see some SKC soccer is coming to an end. The team announced they will live-stream their next two games against New York City FC and Minnesota United FC, as a part of the Coachella Valley Invitational. The final game against USL Championship side Las Vegas Lights is behind closed doors.

Where to Watch

The games will be available on Sporting KC’s YouTube channel and the team will do live updates on their Communications Twitter account.

If you happen to be in Indio, CA, you can also watch the games live at CVI.

What to Watch For

With it being preseason, it’s hard to put too much weight on individual results. Instead, it will likely be more interesting to see how new players are fitting in, how old players are fitting at new positions and things like changes to the style of play.

The first thing to look for has to be new Designated Player Dejan Joveljic. He’s already arrived in preseason, which isn’t too terribly far from his old team in Los Angeles. Theoretically he’s fit and ready to go and could be in the first lineup that takes the field.

In addition to Joveljic, the team has added four other players that we’ll get our first glimpses of. The three Homegrown signings Jacob Bartlett, Ian James and Jack Kortkamp have all played extensively. And Mason Toye has been starting at CF, but it seems he’ll bump down the depth chart a bit now.

Another thing to look out for is the health of the team. In the last game, the team was missing William Agada, Dany Rosero, Joaquin Fernandez, Tim Leibold and Ryan Schewe. Agada, Rosero and Schewe have yet to play at all this preseason. Also, Logan Ndenbe subbed himself out early against Charlotte.

Something else to keep an eye on is where a few guys are lining up. Erik Thommy has been listed as playing on the right wing throughout preseason. Is that just where he’s starting or is he there all the time? Jake Davis has played mostly midfield but a little right back too. Khiry Shelton has played right back and center back.

In other words, the results aren’t the most important, but picking up the first win of preseason would be a nice cherry on top.

Preseason Roster Changes

Along with the announcement of the streamed games, Sporting KC announced some preseason roster changes. They added SKC Academy goalkeeper Beau Barren to the roster. Additionally, they sent home two SuperDraft picks in Dyson Clapier and Anthony Samways and trialist Carson Klein. It’s possible those three could still make the SKC II roster.

Outside of Joveljic joining, the rest of the roster remains the same.

What are you looking forward to as preseason is played in front of our eyes?

I've been covering Kansas City soccer since 2014, including Sporting Kansas City, the KC Current, SKC II and more. I'm based out of Kansas City, MO, but got my start covering SKC while writing from Phoenix, AZ.

Thank for the info!

John

I will not “happen to be in Indio,” which one only would ever visit on purpose. But, exactly that I plan to do. Taking Wednesday off to watch some scintillating preseason soccer. Because, apparently, my life is pretty empty.

Does anyone know, if I don’t get home until 5:30 will I be able to watch from start immediately? Sometime 1-2 hours after the game is over? Never?
