The Kansas City Current are set to announce Vlatko Andonovski as their new head coach. Sources have confirmed that Andonovski will be announced as soon as Monday. Andonovski will also be the Sporting Director and will have greater control of the roster and his staff.

Andonovski previously coached in the NWSL with FC Kansas City and Reign FC (OL Reign now). He was a surprise pick to lead FC Kansas City when the league formed to people outside of the Kansas City area. Under Andonovski’s leadership, FC Kansas City made the playoffs in their first three seasons and won the NWSL Championship in 2014 and 2015. When FC Kansas City was disbanded after the 2017 season, Andonovski moved to the Reign where he guided them to the playoffs both seasons.

On the back of his success in the NWSL, Andonovski was named the US Women’s National Team coach in 2019, succeeding Jill Ellis. He led the U.S. to a 51-9-5 record but resigned after the team did not meet expectations at the World Cup.

The Current were led to the NWSL Championship in 2022 under former U.S. assistant Matt Potter. Early in the 2023 season, Potter was fired for reasons never fully explained. Caroline Sjöblom stepped up to be the interim head coach and attempted to transform the Current into a possession-oriented team. The Current fell short of making the playoffs for the second time in their three years in the league. No announcement has been made about Sjöblom and her staff at this time.

Andonovski still resides in the Kansas City area and was always a likely candidate to fill the head coach role for the Current when it became open.
