Across State Lines: Draper Called Up to Ecuadorian Olympic Camp

It’s an Olympic year this coming summer in Paris, and that means a U23 tournament there. The United States has already qualified for the tournament, but other federations will have their qualifiers in the first part of this year. One of those is CONMEBOL, whose tournament is coming up in January and February. With that going on, countries have been having Olympic camps for teams ahead of the tournament. One of those is Ecuador, who called up their roster for the tournament. Former Sporting KC II player, Andrew Draper was a late addition to the squad after three players originally called up were not released by their club. Ecuador will play Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Brazil in the group stage with two teams advancing to a second group stage. The top two in the second group stage will advance to the Olympics.

In other national team news, former Sporting KC forward, Soony Saad will be representing Lebanon in the AFC Asian Cup that kicks off this Friday in Qatar. Lebanon is grouped with hosts Qatar, who they open the tournament against Friday, Tajikistan, and China. The top two teams will automatically advance to the knock out stage, with third place having a chance to reach the knockout stage as well. Also called up to the AFC Asian Cup is Sunil Chhetri who will captain India against Syria, Uzbekistan, and Australia.
