Zusi Takes to Reddit

Former Sporting Kansas City player, and future Sporting Legend, Graham Zusi dropped by Reddit on Wednesday for an AMA (ask me anything). It only lasted an hour but is well worth a read. There is talk of Roger Espinoza’s bachelor party, man buns, and who would win a fight with Seth Sinovic, among other topics.

But as with all of these AMAs, a few answers stand out more than others.

One reader, sitheguy95, asked if Zusi would be interested in a coaching role for Sporting KC, to which Zusi replied, “I’d love to be involved with the club in some capacity!” He didn’t exactly say he wanted to be a coach, but there were rumors of his departure not sitting well with him a few years ago. It’s good to hear he is interested in future involvement.

Also, when asked what other club he would have liked to play for in MLS, he simply replied, “#SKCTID.” That’s the only right answer.

Stefan Cleveland > John Pulskamp

At Tuesday’s press availability, Raphael Wicky made it official: Stefan Cleveland is the starting goalkeeper. At least for right now. He did say there is a competition and he expects John to push Stefan. Below are his full answers.

Immediately after the game on Saturday, when it was unknown who would play next, the players were careful in their remarks and complimentary to both goalkeepers. When the KC Soccer Journal asked Cleveland about his ability to keep his defense organized, he said, “I think that was one of the things that I could bring to the group. A little bit of experience and leadership. I think John’s done a fantastic job, but I think sometimes it’s just a different voice.”

When we asked center back Wyatt Meyer what differences Cleveland brings to the field, he was quick to reply. “I have faith in both our goalkeepers. Whoever is behind me. They’re both top keepers.” Meyer later added, “[Cleveland] brings that element of age. He’s a little bit older. He’s a little bit more experienced. He’s really vocal and communicative and that’s really helpful for center backs like me and Ethan [Bartlow].”

Competition should be good for everyone. If the team was deeper, perhaps more positions would have healthy competition.

Bad Debinha Injury News

After being a surprise addition to the injury report, Kansas City Current fans got more bad news on Tuesday. Head coach Chris Armas initially said she’ll be out “a few months” before giving a more nuanced answer and ending with “for a little bit.”

Either way, it’s bad news for a team that was just getting healthy. The team is 1-0-0 without Debinha and it’s a luxury they have so many players capable of playing that attacking midfielder role. But missing a player who, at times, has been one of the best players in the world, is a big blow.

KC Current II Games Open to the Public

After existing behind closed doors for most of the time they’ve been a team, the Kansas City Current II announced they would invite fans to their home games at the new Riverside Stadium. They are playing in the WPSL while they await the potential formation of the NWSL 2 (or whatever it will be called).

Parking is free at Riverside Stadium. You can also get in free if you are a Current Club member or you are under the age of 6. For others, you can get $5 tickets through the KC Current app or $10 tickets for general admission at the gate.

Other Tidbits

• Rumors are the MLS Next Pro will re-align their schedule with their MLS counterparts in 2027, including their own sprint season.
• Speaking of MLS Next Pro, they are getting an injection of Private Equity funds. It’s setting up a Private Equity battle between them and the USL for future expansion teams.
• Sporting KC announced the bands, performers and DJs who will be playing at their World Cup watch parties.

• Did you know Sporting KC II played on Wednesday night? If you don’t know the result, you can just watch the game and be surprised.

• FIFA is proposing a requirement for all teams to have a U21 player in the lineup at all times.
• The last MLS teams were eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions Cup this week. This simple Tweet really puts it into perspective how poor they historically do in this competition, with the Seattle Sounders accounting for that one green check.
