With the 2024 season (unfortunately) over, here is where the KC Current contract situations sit heading into the offseason.

The 2024 NWSL season, unfortunately, came to an end on Sunday in Orlando for the Kansas City Current. The Orlando Pride defeated the KC Current 3-2 in an all-time thriller. With wounds still fresh, attention does start to turn to 2025. The job of a manager is never done. Maybe more specifically, new permanent General Manager, Caitlin Carducci, has to get to work.

There are quite a few players on guaranteed contracts, but a stunning amount are out of contract after this season. While the team will look the same in some ways, it could look very different in others. A total of 11 players will have their fates decided this offseason.

Out of Contract after 2024 (No Option Years)

Elizabeth Ball, Kristen Hamilton, Nichelle Prince, AD Franch, Almuth Schult, Katie Fraine, Mallory Weber and Desiree Scott

Eight players are out of contract. On this list, Almuth Schult is the only regular starter as the season ended. The 33-year-old German goalkeeper was a revelation when she joined in the summer. The entire goalkeeper room is out of contract, and it could be a real changing of the guard come 2025.

Close behind Schult in terms of playing time was Nichelle Prince. She was a semi-regular starter down the stretch, or at least the first player off the bench.

Beyond that, there could be some upheaval. Elizabeth Ball has been a stalwart of this defense for years, but her future location could be dictated by the destination of her partner Kristen Hamilton. Hammy seemingly fell out of favor despite being one of the best scorers in KC Current history.

Mallory Weber missed the entirety of the 2024 season after missing a lot of time in recent years with injuries. Her time has likely come to an end in KC, though you never know.

And we all know Desiree Scott is retiring. An absolute legend.

2024 Loan End w/ Purchase Option

Hildah Magaia

The South African international known as the breadwinner, arrived on loan from Mexico and made a few appearances. However, she ended the year injured and it’s very up in the air if the team will trigger her purchase option.

2025 Contract Options

Stine Ballisager, Sophie Braun, Regan Steigleder*

During the 2024 season, the NWSL Players Association reached a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Part of that new deal was the elimination of team held options. Instead, all contract options would be mutual, meaning either the player or the team could trigger it.

However, these three contracts were signed before that CBA was reached. Ballisager had a mutual option in her deal, but Braun and Steigleder didn’t, at least according to the press releases announcing their signings. If Stine wants to stay, all she has to do is trigger her own option. Looking at the CB depth chart, she may be as low as 4th or 5th (if Ball stays) with Alana Cook, Kayla Sharples and Gabby Robinson seemingly ahead of her.

As for Braun, she spent a chunk of 2024 on loan in the USL Super League with Spokane Zephyr. And Steigleder was rumored to have her option for 2025 already triggered, so she may be falsely on this list.

One player not listed here is Bia Zaneratto who the KC Soccer Journal can confirm had her 2025 option triggered.

For anyone you don’t see here, you’ll see them below because they are signed through at least 2025. That includes every other starter on the roster, the team’s top three fullbacks and top three center backs. Lots of young and veteran talent. This team is already stacked for 2025 and should only get stronger through the offseason.
