Sporting Kansas City fell 2-1 at the Seattle Sounders Thursday night. The visitors looked poised to get a result but a late goal sent Sporting KC home empty-handed.

“We were very unlucky to lose here in the 90th minute,” SKC head coach Raphael Wicky told media after the match. “Overall, I believe the team had another really good performance away from home, against a team who we all know has a lot of experience. On turf here in this stadium, it’s never easy. I believe that the team had a very good performance. We created a lot of attacking actions, played well, and defended together. It was very unlucky that we leave here away with zero points. That hurts of course, but I think our last four or five performances are going in the right direction. That’s where we have to take the positives from.”

Coach Wicky started the same lineup as he did in the shutout win in Houston last match. Injuries did not leave Kansas City many options, especially at center back. The team had just recalled Ethan Bartlow from loan to provide more depth on defense.

The Seattle Sounders lineup was missing former SKC striker Dejan Joveljić due to his duty with the Serbian national team.

In the 44th minute, SKC forwards were pressing Seattle. Stephen Afrifa earned an assist when he deflected an attempt to play out by the Sounders. The ball went to Andre Luiz who again showed his why he was brought in on a club-record transfer. A quick touch to set the ball up where he wanted  it and the next touch saw the ball blasting past Seattle keeper Andrew Thomas to give the visitors the 1-0 lead.

The start of the second half saw Seattle come out strong. Longtime SKC foe Cristian Roldan started the play that would level the match in the 51st minute. Roldan played a direct ball over SKC to Jordan Morris. Kansas City defender Jansen Miller was able to catch Morris and harass him enough to prevent him from getting a shot of his own. Morris fought off the pesky KC defender enough to lay a ball back towards the penalty spot. Seattle 20-year-old Homegrown Player Sebastian Gomez ran unmarked into the SKC penalty area where he laced the ball into the back of the net for his first career MLS goal.

Sporting KC and Seattle took turns through most of the rest of the second half but the dagger into Kansas City’s hopes came in the 90th minute. After SKC were unable to score on one end, the Sounders countered. Morris was the provider this time, although he did not earn an assist. Roldan received the ball while running directly at SKC’s goal. Wyatt Meyer made a valiant effort to tackle the ball away. Instead the attempt bounced off Roldan and into KC’s net.

Sporting KC attempted to grab a late goal but play was stopped before they could.

Sporting Kansas City returns home to host the Portland Timbers at 7:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Oct. 10 after the Internationl break concludes.
