MLS Elo Power Rankings: Vancouver Claims #2 Before World Cup Pause; SKC Dodges Last Place
The regular season officially hits the pause button for the 2026 World Cup! Check out how the top tier shook out, and see why Sporting KC managed to stay clear of last place in this week’s snapshot.
The 2026 MLS regular season is hitting the pause button. As the league takes a break for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, each team has been fighting to lock in their current form and build up momentum to carry into the summer break. With two months of reflection ahead for players and staff, let’s look at who sits at the top, and who has some summer school homework to do before the return to action.
Shake-Up at the Top: Vancouver Leaps Miami
While Nashville SC held strong to retain the crown (+5.7), some drama happened right below them. The Vancouver Whitecaps put together a wonderful weekend, earning a +11.8 Elo boost to jump above Inter Miami and claim the #2 spot.
Conversely, Inter Miami slid down to #3 despite gaining +4.8 points. The Herons’ form remains lethal (LWWWW), but Vancouver’s explosive week allowed the Whitecaps to pull ahead. The San Jose Earthquakes managed to cling tightly to fourth place with a timely win (+6.5), and rounding out the top five, FC Dallas jumped two places to lock down the #5 spot with a +10.1-point performance, solidifying a good run of form (WWDWW) right before the break.
Sporting KC Stumbles, But Stay out of the Basement
After two weeks of positive results, Sporting Kansas City had to swallow a -9.3-point hit over the weekend following a frustrating loss that disrupted their recent momentum (DLWWL).
Normally, an Elo drop like that at the bottom of the table is a ticket back into the cellar, but because the Philadelphia Union lost again and bled another -4.8 Elo points, the status quo at the bottom remains… quo. SKC holds steady at #29 (1441.6), maintaining a roughly 10-point cushion over the #30 Union (1431.8). It wasn’t a pretty weekend for Kansas City, but at least they get to spend the World Cup pause out of last place.
Around the League
- Charlotte’s Rocket: Charlotte FC took home the honor of the biggest rank advancement this week, rocketing up a stellar five spots to land at #15 on the back of a +12.9 Elo point infusion.
- LAFC Back in the Ten: Los Angeles FC quieted recent doubts by climbing three spots back into the Top 10 (#10, 1515.3) with an excellent +13.1-point performance.
- Cascadia Cool Down: While Vancouver flies high, the Sounders are experiencing freefall. Seattle shed -13.1 points and slipped out of the top five down to #7 after consecutive losses (DDWLL).
Here’s the full table as it stands heading into the World Cup break.
Parting Thought: Things are interesting in the West. Vancouver gets to enjoy the break knowing they are breathing down Nashville’s neck for the Supporters Shield, while Seattle has work to do if they want to climb back to an elite status. For SKC, it’s all about righting the ship so that when July rolls around, they can continue climbing away from the wooden spoon.
