Who is Daniel Shalloy? Apple TV continues to miss the mark

Just ask Hugo Joris.

One of the growing pains fans noticed in the first year of Apple TV’s decade-long broadcast rights deal with Major League Soccer, were the announcers who were suddenly covering teams they hadn’t before.

While quite annoying, the mispronunciations and incorrect statements were begrudgingly accepted as we waited for Apple to work out the kinks.

But now, we’re in season two. It’s been a full year.

Hugo Joris? Daniel Shalloy? It’s embarrassing.

Or at least it should be.

Daniel Salloi is a key player and literal MLS All Star for Sporting KC. And Hugo Lloris!? Is he MOST famous keeper on the planet… or just the second most famous goal keeper in the entire world?

All the research it takes to get players’ names right, is to watch the match highlights from the week before.

This is a really simple fix. It’s very basic stuff and it isn’t asking a lot. Apple TV simply need to be better on this front.

On that note, the Apple TV Pronunciation Guide is the sponsor of this week’s episode of Shades of Blue!

The Sporting KC defense has only allowed one goal in the first three matches, according to Cody’s personal record book. Andreu Fontas was a WALL in the shut out at LAFC.

Was the Tim Melia handball as dumb as it looked? Or did the referees cause the confusion?

The Alan Pulido scoring drought continues. Is 0-0-3 an acceptable record thus far?

Thankfully, SKC will face the San Jose Earthquakes this weekend, who have yet to earn a point this season while allowing seven goals so far.

KC Current open the new stadium this weekend! We talk food options… and the very important distinction between tacos & burritos.

All I can say is “Shalloy” actually looked a bit like a 10. Love how he cuts into the field, almost in a Gadi Kinda’ish kind of way. But they need more coordination, aggression and decisiveness in the final third.

Shadows of what he can do. He disappeared for much of the game though. Between his absence, Pulido’s turnovers, and Russell’s age we are in trouble offensively.

On the refs: I caught a bit about how the ref spoke very little English. I don’t know how much that played into the confusion on the field, but it could have been a factor.

And the announcers not pronouncing names…. this is one of those small touches that defines a professional league. If you don’t hone in on those details then you will always be viewed as amateur. No, the announcers aren’t the best, as MLS is mandating what is allowed to be said and what isn’t. So the best probably don’t want to become mouthpieces to things they don’t agree with.

I agree that Memo (Meemo) totally surpassed my expectations. He was physical when he needed to be, and had some very organic movement in the offensive third (some one-touch plays with thommy and davis). He even had good vision for those big switches. He definitely was slower, but wasn’t a flop.

Fontas was a brick wall. He intercepted pass after pass and our defense was locked down. Leibold did get bullied early on, but his play through LAFC’s press was impressive. He did step up and held his own later in.

I don’t know what to say about the offense. Where are they? Does Peter take every offensive player and crush their creativity? Why does it seem like our new guys provide a spark and then they fizzle into obscurity? This is a troublesome pattern that I can only speak to anecdotally, but would want to dive into numbers.

0-0-3 is not a great start. Our midfield has still outscored our offense and even looked more threatening than our offense in this last game. Thommy, Walter and Memo shouldn’t have to put the team on their back as they run themselves into the ground.

Subs should have happened. I said it in the match thread, but we are only going to injure our aging players, and worsen light injuries because of inadequate rotation. If we don’t have the depth for this then who do we blame? Vermes. I think he gets to skate on some of his roster building questions because we have to choose: ask him about the coaching or ask him about the roster build. I don’t feel like he offers twice as much of his time as we would get with having a technical director.

Long comment, sorry. I’m being held captive while my kid plays with his RC truck outside.

So… I had a breakfast burrito, lol, with some really good breakfast potatoes. But, I do remember someone missing a pod recording because his wife was going to brunch…

I’ve got kids to take care of! 😂😂😂😂

Does anyone know if there is any broadcast or stream of the CONCACAF Champion’s Cup games? Also the SKCII game is one of the few not on Apple this weekend. Is that a good or a bad thing (does that give us more options to watch or fewer)?

Thad Bell

It will be on a youtube channel. I will make sure to tweet it out if not get it in an article.
