What is the Wicky Way?
New Head Coach Raphael Wicky is shifting formations and experimenting as he settles in with Sporting KC amidst a massive rebuild.
As new Head Coach Raphael Wicky settles in with Sporting KC, he’s shifting formations and trying different combinations all over the field. This week on the Shades of Blue Soccer Show, we’re analyzing just what he’s doing to keep this team competitive. What is the ‘Wicky Way’ and will it win us some matches this year?
One point from the first three matches doesn’t exactly shift anyone away from their low expectations. Last place in the West doesn’t help either. In the last two matches, however, SKC have shown a few more positives. Wicky has a clean slate and a roster (nearly) full of fresh players looking to make an impact.
He’s testing. He’s experimenting. The defensive shifts throughout the match against San Diego helped keep Sporting KC within striking distance until the final whistle.
The show dives into the 1-0 shutout loss to see which of those things worked… and which ones didn’t.
Check out the full episode this week as we discuss the state of SKC in 2026, the upcoming Current season, and some USMNT talk. Also, we have another argument about goalkeepers.
PLUS… we have exciting news!

transfer complete?
We think it is, but nothing is ever official until they are holding up a scarf or jersey for a photo opp after being asked dumb questions by the media.
Wicky, a Wicky, Wicky Wild Wild West…
Given that we have yet to see the big additions to the team, Larsen just arrived, Blorian arrives in, what, July?, Borges and Capita are allegedly signed but maybe not. I’m not sure we have any idea what the Wicky way is going to be. He will adapt according to talent, I think he’s made that clear, but will he see his team with the additions in the same way he sees this group?
