Sporting KC’s Losing Streak Hits Ten
Sure, it’s over two seasons, but it’s definitely wearing down the fanbase. Or at least a subsection of it who keep hoping for change.
For the Glory KC is back with the 122nd episode of the show!
Sporting Kansas City played their first game on full rest for the 2025 MLS season, and it seemingly didn’t matter. D.C. United pulled off a 2-1 come from behind victory at home. Maybe it’s rest plus chemistry that Sporting KC need. Plus, Jake Davis in the midfield. Plus… something else?
Sheena and I open the episode looking for positives from Saturday’s game before inevitably turning to the negatives. One list did outweigh the other, sadly.
In a more fun story, we spend some time talking about what’s happening at our neighbors to the north. The Des Moines Menace are signing all kinds of retired MLS players to bring some positive attention to the 2025 US Open Cup. Among those signings is Sporting KC legend and former SKC II coach, Benny Feilhaber. He’ll be joined by at least eight other retired MLS players as they take on Sporting KC II in the opening round of the US Open Cup on March 19th.
After that, we blitz through the Sporting KC round-up which includes an injury update for Andrew Brody, last week’s SKC penalty maybe being the wrong call and why Erik Thommy is only the captain “right now,” according to Peter Vermes.
Finally, the KC Current get to bring us some joy with their season getting started next week. We take a quick look ahead to the season opener against the Portland Thorns.
In the Digital Crawl, we touch on a few more topics, including:
- MLS Next Pro looking for more teams out of their primary markets (“2” teams included)
- Chris Rindov finds a new club
- Sophia
SmithWilson is pregnant - and upcoming goalkeeper rule changes
Here is a rundown of topics (and approximate start times):
- Sporting KC lose their 10th straight – 1:35
- Benny Feilhaber is back (sort of) – 28:56
- SKC Round-Up – 41:10
- KC Current season is starting – 48:29
- Digital Crawl – 56:17

I appreciate the podcast so much. I have a thought or two:
1) Im kind of shocked that Dan “mustache-man” Salloi has not hardly played this season. has this shocked anyone else?
2) Why has Afrifa not seen a single minute? Is he hurt? It just seems odd to me.
3) I did feel J. Miller is going to do well.
4) I honestly thought they handled Benteke well.
5) This is going to be a long long season.
1) Shhhhhh! Don’t tell Vermes. Maybe he has forgot about Salloi. I can’t say I’m disappointed.
2) Vermes needs to let the young many have a run so we can see what he brings with the new signings.
3) I thought Miller was fine. I hope he buries Voloder deep on the bench.
4) Benteke is a load. If nothing else, our two starting centerbacks at least have the ability to play physical. It helps that Benteke isn’t the hardest center forward to mark because he doesn’t have great off the ball movement.
5) Ugh!
100% agree with you.
Thanks Shawn. Sorry, I’m just now seeing this comment. It’s been a busy week.
I’m just gonna answer, #2: He played 90 for SKC II against Dynamo 2 last week. I meant to mention it in the show, but it was a weird night of recording that day and it slipped my mind.
I believe he had a very nice assist on the only goal for SKC II. Would still love to see Afrifa get minutes on the first team. He has more upside than any of our other wingers. He didn’t dress for the II’s for Friday nights game so maybe we see him in the game on Saturday.
I also noticed Jacob Bartlett and Ian James started and played all 90 minutes Friday night for SKC II. I doubt those 2 will suit up on Saturday for SKC. I hope this means we see Jake or Thommy back in midfield instead of Bassong. Fingers crossed.
Yay! Current. Got my opening day tickets – as well as SKC tix for that night*. Doing the double!
*And by have the tickets I mean I have an email that says the tickets are available and that I should download the SeatGeek app. Not as nice as that little piece of cardboard.
What is the MLS record for most consecutive losses? SKC has to be getting close. I’m torn. If it means getting rid of Vermes, I would gladly watch them lose 20 in a row.
14 – FC Cincinnati Sept ’21-March ’22.
History is in reach, guys!
This is the number I’m aware of too.
Why is it DJ9 is looking like Pulido?
Why does it feel like new SKC players do their best before they’ve learned Vermes’ system?
Why are the flashes of good not repeatable?
Why does it look like SKC players spend more time thinking about playing than actually playing?
Why are we so desperate to find something good that one SKC podcast is happy to just see tactics in a game.
Why does it feel like we’re watching the same game again and again?
Why do we think a coach known for not changing will successfully change a roster?
Why do I think #11 is on the way, or if it not, that a win is but a lucky blip?
SKC is killing my fandom minute by minute. Or am I letting them?
I’ll address a few.
Dejan is playing too deep, agreed. He needs to be running on counter-attacks I think but that’s not how SKC has played (despite glimpses of it in preseason). Maybe that’ll change.
If this is them playing their best before they’ve learned PV’s system, I’m concerned. But I know what you mean, sometimes they are too pragmatic. I often think of a moment in the Tulsa Athletic US Open Cup game from 2 seasons ago (the one where Jake debuted at RB). They were attacking up the left, Ethan Bryant (on loan from the II’s) had the ball and Salloi pointed for him to play back and safe, but he didn’t and they scored. They need more of that. But now Bryant is gone from the II’s with Monterrey…
I think the Erik Thommy goal is super repeatable, so that’s a good thing (versus the luck of Memo’s deflection and the PK on the first 2 goals of the season).
Otherwise, I’m willing to give it time. This is only the 2nd week of proper practice. I really wish they weren’t in CCC (they didn’t deserve to be) as I feel it put them further behind.
“Otherwise, I’m willing to give it time”
so how much time? feels like we’ve given plenty
its always something else with this team; remember the season we just needed the starters back? lol
ps love the pod and all you do
