Shaking off the dust

Why Sporting KC surviving in Houston with a point is actually a nice result to kick off 2024.

The season opener for Sporting KC wasn’t pretty. There’s plenty for them to fine-tune and sharpen up as they get into the flow of the MLS season. But the newest Shade of Blue will tell you why earning a point on the road against a strong Houston Dynamo side, is actually a nice result to kick off 2024.

Rustiness was most apparent when SKC tried to play out from the back. Too many poor passes and bad touches allowed the Dynamo to control possession. As well as nearly every other stat you can think of.

The attacking core struggled all game. Pulido let a couple chances go by the wayside. But the real kicker is that even the substitutes failed to make a real impact on the game.

On the other hand, Sporting KC played far below their potential… and still came out with a result.

This bodes well for the optimists out there.

The show also talks next week’s matchup with the Philadelphia Union. Robert says Jim Curtain and the Union are what we WISH Sporting KC would be.

Re: Thommy goal – the factors were it was a deep midfield run at pace. It wasn’t super direct, at least initially. But he also didn’t have any attacking options. Salloi started running a bit wide but had no idea how to support the attack and didn’t really draw a defender wide. He just stopped running.

I want Thommy to do this more. Afrifa sparked when he drove at a defender. Our current attackers dribble wide, letting defenders force them into the wings and corners.

Hopefully we get more comfortable on the ball as we move forward in the season, but damn we looked scared to touch it at first.

I thought the officiating was good – all things considered. Maybe a few more yellows (kicking the ball away) would have been warranted, but I don’t recall egregious missed calls or even repeated lack of calls.

We should also hold an intervention for Ilie. Someone’s gotta tell him.

Hi,

Any idea why the show hasn’t been showing up on the podcast feed on Pocketcasts the last several weeks?
