The first leg of preseason has come to an end for Sporting Kansas City. The team will head back to KC for a few days before returning to Miami on Sunday. The team fell to 1-1-1 with a 2-1 loss to Nashville SC on Tuesday afternoon, though the “starters” left it 1-1 at the half.

What may be more interesting than just another preseason game is what wheeling and dealing may have happened on the sidelines. Mike Jacobs, the General Manager and Sporting Director of Nashville, is a former Peter Vermes protege and the two are no strangers doing business with one another. After Friday’s preseason game with Charlotte FC, the teams announced a trade on Monday. Maybe it’ll happen again, though I wouldn’t get your hopes up.

The Lineups

Unlike the first preseason game, Tuesdays was a full 90 minutes, with a full change at halftime for Sporting KC. It was the exact same starting XI as Friday against Charlotte, with Dany Rosero still dealing with his green card issues and Daniel Salloi being rested.

The second half brought another full change, but it was a slightly different look than the prior game. Kayden Pierre made his preseason debut with a 15-minute shift before being replaced by SKC Academy defender Jacob Bartlett. And SKC II’s Sebastian Cruz played in place of Khiry Shelton who has picked up an injury.

The Goals

As of this writing, we don’t have any video of the goals, so there is a weird point of contention. Sporting KC tweeted out the first goal was an own goal from Jake Davis, but Nashville credited the goal to forward Jacob Shaffelburg. I highly doubt Davis would take the blame if that’s not what happened, so we’ll log it as an own goal.

Sporting KC equalized a few minutes later when Tim Leibold assisted Alan Pulido on his first goal of preseason.

In the second half, Tyler Boyd put in the game winning goal for Nashville in the 53rd minute. The game would end 2-1.

Update 5:22 PM – Here are the two Nashville goals.

  • 9′ NSH – Jake Davis own goal
  • 14′ SKC – Alan Pulido (Tim Leibold)
  • 53′ NSH – Tyler Boyd

Vermes Presser

After the game was over, the media got a chance to talk to Peter Vermes about various topics. Here are some highlights:

  • Khiry Shelton has a high ankle sprain and will be out a couple weeks.
  • Stephen Afrifa at LW this preseason has been “one of the real bright spots so far.
  • PV hopes to have signings in camp by phase two of preseason, which starts Sunday.
  • Also, Dany Rosero and Daniel Salloi will be available then too.
  • I asked Peter about the two SuperDraft picks in camp. Goalkeeper Ryan Schewe sounds like he’s doing well and has all the tools and GK coach Alec Dufty is going to get him where he needs to be and he’ll “become a really good goalkeeper.”
  • Third-round pick Jonathan Robinson apparently has the skills but has further to go. And he may have come into camp not at the level of fitness SKC require. Combine that with how high PV spoke of Zorhan Bassong and it seems clear Robinson is destined for SKC II.
  • MLS and Liga MX, according to PR, will be making an announcement about Leagues Cup in the next 24 hours. I suspect it’ll be the schedule.

I've been covering Kansas City soccer since 2014, including Sporting Kansas City, the KC Current, SKC II and more. I'm based out of Kansas City, MO, but got my start covering SKC while writing from Phoenix, AZ.
