The Kansas City Current announced a new signing this week with the addition of Malawi National Team captain Temwa Chawinga. The prolific goal scorer signed a two-year contract through the 2025 season and will be with the club for preseason. Prolific is an understatement as the 25-year-old forward outscored all players in the world in 2023 with 63 goals in 84 matches.

“I’m very excited for Temwa to come to Kansas City,” said head coach Vlatko Andonovski via press release. “She is a dynamic player who has shown she can find the goal at every stop along her path. She will be fun to watch.”

“Temwa is an exciting player and we’re very happy she has chosen to come to Kansas City,” said general manager Camille Ashton via press release. “She has found success in Sweden and China at the club level and has been incredibly important to the accomplishments of her home country of Malawi.”

Chawinga joins the Current after playing the last four seasons for Wuhan Jianghan University F.C. in the Chinese Super League.  She scored 83 goals in 84 games  and helped lead Wuhan to four straight Chinese Women’s Super League Championships. Prior to her time in China, Chawinga scored 55 goals from 2017-2019 for Kvarnsvedens IK in Sweden. Chawinga’s numbers were incredible this last season.

She has enjoyed international success as well. After being named the Malawi captain, Chawinga led her country to win the 2023 COSAFA Women’s Championship. In the process she earned the Golden Boot with nine goals and was also the recipient of the Golden Ball for being the tournament’s best player.

“I’m excited to join the Kansas City Current,” said Chawinga. “This team is world class in every way, from the facilities to the environment at the club. I am excited to get started and hopefully bring home a championship.”

Chawinga can play both as a striker and on the wing and will give new Current coach Vlatko Andonovski options.

Most goals in the world

Chawinga not only ended 2023 as the leading female goalscorer of the year according to the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS), she led all men as well. Her 63 goals was nine more than Cristiano Ronaldo (54) who was just ahead of England’s Harry Kane and France’s Kylian Mbappé (both 52).

She is just the third winner of the IFFHS award for women. Spanish star Jenni Hermoso of Spain (2021) and Dutch striker Fenna Kalma (2022) were the first two award winners.
