Many MLS fans (other people definitely not me) rolled their eyes at the addition of the Leagues Cup to their team’s schedule. Dismissing it as a money grab and an unnecessary burden on the small rosters in this league. (They’re crazy, I never doubted it for a second.)
But after an exciting group stage with fierce competition, high tensions, the fans arguing online, and of course Messi, the general attitude may be shifting. There’s an inherent rivalry and palpable desire from both sides to prove they’re better.
So, has the Leagues Cup won you over? That’s our main topic on this episode of Shades of Blue. We also got the best soundbite of the year from Chivas Head Coach Veljko Paunovic, and discuss the Women’s World Cup Group Stage as the US Women’s National Team was lucky to survive the group stage.
As I may have mentioned, I’ve loved the Leagues Cup from the beginning and shame on anyone who only cares now that Sporting KC advanced out of the group. A dominant 1-0 win over Chivas Guadalajara, top of the table in Liga MX, sealed the deal. 11th placed SKC somehow survived the group with the two current best teams in each league.
We hear an amazing range of accents with some great post-game audio. Including a soundbite from a distraught Veljko Paunovic who was happy just to survive The Blue Hell with his life (at about 7 minute mark). Johnny Russell makes fun of Erik Thommy’s overhead kick whiff.
The USWNT was saved by the post in a 0-0 draw with Portugal. Carli Lloyd and the fans are upset at the three performances so far. A lot of fingers are being pointed at friend of the show and Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski. What needs to change for the Americans to win their three-peat?
